I write lot's of negative stuff about Baltimore and Maryland because I am a labor and justice organization and not much good is happening in public policy for those subjects. I want people to know Maryland and Baltimore could be and was a great place to live. I have generations of family living and working in farming and seafood around the Chesapeake Bay and I attended early university in Richmond. I LOVE THE BEAUTY OF THIS REGION---THE HISTORY.
Almost everyone I know in Baltimore will say----THINGS WENT DOWNHILL WHEN BLOOMBERG CAME TO HOPKINS......and that is the gorilla in the room to the decline in public policy Maryland. The second piece is the refusal of citizens in the state to embrace the civil rights/end of Jim Crow era. The antebellum blue blood and company town hold never left Baltimore and it created the most stagnant and repressive of societies because of this. So much money is wasted in keeping these antiquated social structures. Now, with the hold of neo-liberalism and global empire-building the push is to accentuate the negative rather than expanding quality of life.
Racism and classism are not easy things to eradicate even when the desire is there. Resentments and injustice always come back to roost so injustice for one will become injustice for all. Please consider the opportunity given to the American people having founding fathers thoughtful enough to provide a Constitution with a Bill of Rights, Equal Protection, and Due Process with the goal of protecting you and I from the aristocracy and global corporations that made their lives unbearable overseas. We have the tools to keep that Constitution alive but only if that Constitution is truly relent TO EVERYONE EQUALLY. It is because we failed to do that that the rich cornered our politics and public policy voice.
Baltimore is a city of wonderful history, architecture, and great universities----although corporatized and not much value right now. It lies between Washington DC and NYC where great institutions of art, music, and cultural education exist just a train-ride away. The Chesapeake Bay hold water sport and the countryside and mountain beauty is still available yet under grave attack by globalists.
I wanted to share just a few snippets of conversations I heard while traveling on public transit in Baltimore and Maryland:
An immigrant from Poland stated she was riding the bus because her car needed service. She said she had to leave it with a man that was the only car repair she trusted as she had been fleeced over and again by other car repair people. She will ride transit for a few weeks just to find a person she trusts to work on her car......she said she was leaving the area.
An immigrant from Scandinavia was talking to a co-worker and stated over and over----what do people do for fun in Maryland ----what do they do. I cannot find anything to do after work. It seems that all Maryland wants is for people to work......she said she was leaving the area.
An Hispanic immigrant working for a home health business was complaining to a friend that where she worked----THEY TREAT US LIKE ANIMALS. I was told to care for a woman with leg wounds and was blamed for problems when I have never been trained to do such a job. This happens in all jobs I've taken......she said she had family looking for work out of the state.
A man talking to a friend said everyone in Anne Arundel County was being pushed to 30 hours a week with no benefits and there were no new jobs being created. He saw no way to meet his financial obligations and lamented that he was a life-long citizen of Maryland being forced to leave the state for better employment.
There is widespread activism in Baltimore over complete suspension of Rule of Law regarding police harassment, intimidation, excessive force, and a predatory government seizing citizens' wealth through fraud and corruption. Johns Hopkins says------people born poor stay poor and made itself a global corporation lying, cheating, and stealing War on Poverty and New Deal social program funding from the citizens of Baltimore. Black citizens in Baltimore die 30 years earlier than affluent citizens, 50% unemployment for black youth and almost as high for black men, the poverty is so great that black market and crime is the only way to survive creating systemic violence and crime.
IT'S ALL ABOUT MAINTAINING WEALTH INEQUITY.
Maryland and Baltimore have great potential. We have allowed the wrong people to gain control of government----we have allowed the public space to be dismantled that gives us the power of organization and voice. We simply need to take it back and it is easy peasy if you and I become engaged in politics and public policy!
THANKS TO ALL THAT FOLLOW MY ORGANIZATION AND BLOG!
