On this day in 1980, CNN (Cable News Network), the world’s first 24-hour television news network, makes its debut. The network signed on at 6 p.m. EST from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, with a lead story about the attempted assassination of civil rights leader Vernon Jordan.
CNN went on to change the notion that news could only be reported at fixed times throughout the day. At the time of CNN’s launch, TV news was dominated by three major networks–ABC, CBS and NBC–and their nightly 30-minute broadcasts. Initially available in less than two million U.S. homes, today CNN is seen in more than 89 million American households and over 160 million homes internationally.
CNN was the brainchild of Robert “Ted” Turner, a colorful, outspoken businessman dubbed the “Mouth of the South.” Turner was born on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and as a child moved with his family to Georgia, where his father ran a successful billboard advertising company. After his father committed suicide in 1963, Turner took over the business and expanded it. In 1970, he bought a failing Atlanta TV station that broadcast old movies and network reruns and within a few years Turner had transformed it into a “superstation,” a concept he pioneered, in which the station was beamed by satellite into homes across the country. Turner later bought the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the Atlanta Hawks basketball team and aired their games on his network, TBS (Turner Broadcasting System). In 1977, Turner gained international fame when he sailed his yacht to victory in the prestigious America’s Cup race.
In its first years of operation, CNN lost money and was ridiculed as the Chicken Noodle Network. However, Turner continued to invest in building up the network’s news bureaus around the world and in 1983, he bought Satellite News Channel, owned in part by ABC, and thereby eliminated CNN’s main competitor. CNN eventually came to be known for covering live events around the world as they happened, often beating the major networks to the punch. The network gained significant traction with its live coverage of the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and the network’s audience grew along with the increasing popularity of cable television during the 1990s.
In 1996, CNN merged with Time Warner, which merged with America Online four years later. Today, Ted Turner is an environmentalist and peace activist whose philanthropic efforts include a 1997 gift of $1 billion to the United Nations.
Since CNN was founded in 1980s by TURNER it has merged and been acquired by TIME-----TIME WARNER-------ATT----nothing is more FAR-RIGHT WING GLOBAL CORPORATE then TIME MAGAZINE media or WARNER-----or ATT. Below we see a FAKE MEDIA FACT CHECK telling us that after 30 years of merging with hyper neo-conservative media outlets that CNN is STILL being sold as almost RADICAL LEFTIST media.
When we talk to right wing citizens about how they can think a global corporation is LEFTIST-----this is what they say:
Right wing is sovereign national republic so anything global is not right wing so they call it LEFTIST. What really is happening is------right wing is national corporate republican while global corporations are FAR-FAR RIGHT WING GLOBAL CORPORATE. So, there is no LEFTIST in any of these media structures.
Left social progressive media starts at GRASSROOTS/LOCAL LEVEL. It would never allow itself to be tied to these corporate structures.
CNN IS DEFINITELY FAKE NEWS------BUT IT IS DEFINITELY NOT LEFTIST-----
Tying HANOI JANE FONDA to a marriage with TED TURNER at the time CNN was being founded was all manufactured HYPE to sell this idea of CNN being LEFTIST.
CNN Bias and Credibility Rating
Has this Media Source failed a fact check?
LET US KNOW HERE.
These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward liberal causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports and omit reporting of information that may damage liberal causes. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. See all Left Bias sources.
- Overall, we rate CNN left biased based on story selection that often favors the left. We rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to misinformation and failed fact checks from guests and pundits. However, CNN’s straight news reporting would earn a High rating for factual reporting.
Factual Reporting: MIXED
World Press Freedom Rank: USA 48/180
The Cable News Network (CNN) is an American basic cable, satellite television channel and website. It was founded in 1980 by American media proprietor Ted Turner as a 24-hour cable news channel; however, by April 2016, a CNN executive officially described the channel as “no longer a TV news network” and instead as “a 24-hour global multi-platform network.” CNN has multiple international stations covering all regions of the world. They have been inaccurately criticized as being fake news by President Trump and many of his supporters.
Funded by / Ownership
The Cable News Network is owned by the Turner Broadcasting System (AT&T – Time Warner). The television stations and website is funded through cable subscriptions and an advertising model.
Analysis / Bias
CNN has a left bias in story selection that often favors the left while being critical of the right. For example, during the 2016 Presidential Election Pew Research concluded that the majority of CNN stories covering President Donald Trump were negative. While less dramatic, Pew also determined that more stories were negative toward Presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012.
CNN typically utilizes loaded emotional words in sensational headlines such as this: Trump pounces on Justice Department report findings. They usually source their news properly through credible reporters/journalists and through hyperlinking to credible media sources. However, CNN has failed numerous fact checks from Politifact. It should be noted that these fact checks were almost exclusively from guests on their numerous talk shows and not from the reporting of actual news, which tends to be factual. TV hosts have also failed fact checks by IFCN fact checkers. Further, CNN has retracted published stories that have been deemed as lacking evidence.
Finally, CNN has published misleading information regarding GMO’s that utilize loaded fear based headlines such as this:
FDA allows genetically engineered ‘Frankenfish’ salmon to be imported to US. CNN has also utilized known purveyors of pseudoscience as experts on discussion panels such as the Food Babe.
Overall, we rate CNN left biased based on story selection that often favors the left. We rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to misinformation and failed fact checks from guests and pundits. However, CNN’s straight news reporting would earn a High rating for factual reporting. (5/16/2016) Updated (D. Van Zandt 5/24/2019)

Foundations plan to pay news media to cover radical UN agenda
We all know that much of the media the does the heavy lifting for the Left. Now we have clear proof in this article that certain media outlets are being paid by the likes of Ted Turner and other fat-cat leftists to spread the United Nation’s message of environmental, social, and economic justice. The series of messages being created are designed to effect the opinions of the average uniformed reader in advance of a U.N summit this September (2015) and a greenhouse gas summit in December of this year (2015). Who Owns CNN?12/16/2017
Who owns CNN?
CNN (also known as the Cable News Network) is one of the major cable news stations that broadcasts to over 100 million households in the United States and Canada. The station first aired in 1980 and is the pioneer of 24-hour news.
CNN was founded by Ted Turner who also created an impressive list of other stations including Turner Network Television (TNT), Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Turner Broadcasting Systems (TBS), Headline News, and Cartoon Network.
So, who owns CNN?
Turner Broadcasting Systems runs CNN. However, Turner merger with Time Warner in October 1996. Turner is officially a division of its parent company Time Warner.
Time Warner owns a massive amount of assets in film and television outside of Turner Broadcasting Systems. Some of these assets include Home Box Office (HBO), DC Comics, The CW, and Warner Bros. Entertainment.
We should mention that the U.S. Justice Department sued to block an $85 billion takeover of Time Warner by AT&T in November of 2017. The Justice Department cited antitrust concerns. The merger has now been pushed out to April 22, 2018 as the companies deal with the Justice Department lawsuit.
The concern by the Justice Department has to do, at least partly, with the fact that AT&T owns DirectTV and Time Warner owns a number of television and film assets. The worry is that the combined company could withhold content, say HBO or CNN as examples, from competing companies. They could also increase prices for rivals to air the content.
It appears that the Justice Department and AT&T will face off in court rather quickly to decide if the merger creates antitrust issues. Keep in mind that AT&T has stated that they are unwilling to sell off CNN in order to complete the merger. At this point, it appears that CNN will remain a part of Time Warner, but that could change in the coming months as the court case plays out. We will update the past as more information is available.
ATT was allowed to merge CNN in violation of all that is US ANTI-TRUST MONOPOLY as US SUPREME COURT starts to stop enforcing US ANTI-TRUST LEGAL PRECEDENCE in allowing these media corporations to go global. AT&T Inc. Success
AT&T, headquartered at Whitacre Tower, Dallas, Texas, US, is one of the leading telecommunications corporations in the current precinct. The American based multinational is the pioneer in the mobile industry and telecommunications. Started in 1983, previously it was known as Southwestern Bell Corporation from 1983-1995 and SBC Communications Inc. from 1995-2005. Only recently it has recognized as AT&T Inc.
Being the third largest company in Texas, AT&T is listed as the 23 largest corporations in terms of revenue generation and market value. With over 250 million customers, AT&T proudly stands as one of the leading telecommunication corporation on the globe.
2000: AT&T announces that it will reorganize into a family of companies – AT&T (including AT&T Business and AT&T Consumer), AT&T Wireless and AT&T Broadband. AT&T Wireless is spun off in July 2001, and AT&T Broadband completes a merger with the Comcast Corporation in November 2002.
Comcast is sometimes described as a family business. Brian L. Roberts, chairman, president, and CEO of Comcast, is the son of founder Ralph J. Roberts. Roberts owns or controls about 1% of all Comcast shares but all of the Class B supervoting shares, which gives him an "undilutable 33% voting power over the company". Legal expert Susan P. Crawford has said this gives him "effective control over [Comcast's] every step". In 2010, he was one of the highest paid executives in the United States, with total compensation of about $31 million.
Early life and educationRoberts was born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Ralph J. Roberts, the founder of Comcast Corporation, and Suzanne (née Fleisher), a former actress and playwright. Roberts graduated from the Germantown Academy and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1981, and immediately began working for Comcast.

Telecommunications companies are becoming media companies. That explains AT&T's agreement to buy Time Warner for $85.4 billion. But something else explains it, too.
Media companies are becoming telecoms.
Internet firms like Google and Facebook and Amazon and Netflix are the new media companies. They deliver enormous amounts of video online, posing a direct threat to old-school television and movie companies. But they also are becoming telecoms, threatening the likes of AT&T and Verizon.
They finance undersea cables that link their data centers. They buy fiber optic infrastructure. Facebook builds open source telco gear, Google offers high-speed Internet service, Amazon hopes to become an Internet service provider in Europe. As this happens, telecoms must fight back. And this means challenging tech giants on the media front.
The proposed AT&T/Time Warner deal combines two powerhouses. AT&T is the nation's largest pay TV provider, the second-largest wireless provider, and the third-largest home Internet provider.
Time Warner owns a dizzying array of media properties, including HBO, CNN, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, TBS, TNT, the Cartoon Network and broadcast rights to many live sporting events. But it does not own Time Warner Cable, a separate entity that the cable company Charter Communications bought earlier this year.
The deal confirmed today follow's Comcast's merger with NBC in 2011 and Verizon's acquisition of AOL last year and planned acquisition of Yahoo this year.
Pundits quickly noted that diving into the content industry could be AT&T's attempt to fill the hole that is created as customers ditch cable TV in favor of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube. That's true, but another shift is happening, too.
For years, the big telecom Internet providers essentially operated as dumb pipes. All they did was deliver content. That used to make a lot of sense. A decade ago, the dotcom crash was still a recent memory, and digital piracy threatened to undercut the entire entertainment industry.
How things have changed. AT&T, Comcast and Verizon have watched Amazon, Facebook, and Google take their place among the world's most valuable—and powerful—companies, using infrastructure owned by the telcos. The entertainment industry rebounded as well, with upstarts like Netflix having reinvented the very idea of television.
What's more, those same tech companies have increasingly encroached on the telco's business. They threaten to upend telecommunications much like they've upended other industries, aided by the Federal Communications Commission making more of the wireless spectrum available to them.
Google in particular is eager to access more of the spectrum. And it has a few other projects going that could further undermine traditional telcos. Although Google Fiber and the
companies wild schemes to use balloons and drones to deliver Internet access to remote areas garner a lot of attention, two other projects promise to be more radical.
The wireless Google Fi service essentially resells T-Mobile and Sprint's service. Android phones can discern which carrier offers the strongest signal in any given location, allowing you to move seamlessly between Wi-Fi and the two carriers depending on signal strength. Apple is among the companies that may be developing similar technology.
This could lead to a situation in which your carrier is essentially invisible, and you're paying Google (or another broker) to connect you to the network with the strongest signal. That could be a national carrier, or a local Wi-Fi provider.
Google Station, an effort to provide a unified system for logging into and paying for Wi-Fi around the world, fits neatly into the vision as well.
Put the pieces together and you begin to see a future in which tech companies have commoditized telcos in much the same way they commoditized computer hardware. Telcos, using cheap, off-the-shelf hardware powered by open source designs, could compete to sell bandwidth to the Googles and Amazons of the world at razor thin margins.
AT&T probably isn't thinking about this right now. Like the pundits say, it probably cares more about short-term gains like papering over any potential losses from cord cutting. Nor is any of this to say that the merger will be good for AT&T, let alone the public.
Robert McChesney, a communication professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, says these kinds of mega-mergers rarely benefit the public. "This is a merger that will make no sense," he says. "There's no reason this merger should be done for consumers or workers."
These sorts of deals rarely pan out for the companies involved. New York University economics professor Nicholas S. Economides notes that AT&T's has a checkered history of acquisitions. For example, it bought business technology company NCR in 1991 for $7.4 billion, only to spin spin it off six years later for $3.4 billion. And who could forget Time Warner's disastrous $165 billion1 acquisition of AOL in 2000, which it unloaded in 2009 for $2.5 billion.
If regulators approve the AT&T and Time Warner merger, their blessing almost certainly will include stipulations barring it from, say, refusing to license its movies, television stations and other content to competitors like Comcast. That could make it hard to justify so expensive an acquisition.
But in a world where Internet access is a commodity, not a government-supported monopoly, owning a giant media company begins to make sense.
1Correction 10/23/2016 at 11:30 AM ET: An earlier version of this story said that Time Warner acquired AOL for $165 million. It was $165 billion.

The two had previously worked together as chairman and managing editor, respectively, of the Yale Daily News. They first called the proposed magazine Facts. They wanted to emphasize brevity, so that a busy man could read it in an hour. They changed the name to Time and used the slogan "Take Time–It's Brief". Hadden was considered carefree and liked to tease Luce. He saw Time as important, but also fun, which accounted for its heavy coverage of celebrities (including politicians), the entertainment industry, and pop culture—criticized as too light for serious news'.

Time Warner unveils its new name: Warner
Media by Brian Stelter @brianstelter June 15, 2018: 3:29 PM ET
One day after completing its acquisition of Time Warner, AT&T announced a new name for the media company: WarnerMedia.
John Stankey, the new CEO of the company, announced the rebranding and a series of structural changes in an internal memo on Friday afternoon.
AT&T acted fast after a judge ruled in favor of the acquisition on Tuesday, effectively shredding the government's antitrust lawsuit.
Stankey referenced the winding path of the deal in his inaugural message to employees, including those at CNN.
"After an unusually long and bumpy road getting here, I am delighted and honored to be joining the best team in media and entertainment," he wrote.
WarnerMedia includes HBO, the Warner Bros studio, and Turner, the home of CNN, TNT, TBS and other cable channels.
Turner chief John Martin has "chosen to depart," Stankey said.
So three of the executives who previously reported to Martin -- Turner president David Levy, Turner International president Gerhard Zeiler and CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker -- will now report directly to Stankey.
In Friday's memo, Stankey explained the rationale behind the new name.
The short answer is that it tested very well externally as a naming convention that holds the valuable HBO, Turner and Warner Bros. brands," he wrote. "In addition, we felt that maintaining an element of the proud, established and successful Time Warner is a testament and sign of respect for both its history and for you, as architects of that legacy."
Stankey pointed out that the old name created confusion because many people "never learned to distinguish between Time Warner, the media company, and Time Warner, the former cable company."
"Our consumer research suggests this confusion isn't going away any time soon," he added. "So, it is easier and more economical to change the name, than invest in advertising to resolve the confusion."
Stankey said WarnerMedia is mostly just a "naming convention." What matters a whole lot more are the individual brands like HBO.
AT&T's acquisition of the former Time Warner is the biggest media industry deal in nearly a decade. So there's ample curiosity about what will come next.
Stankey previewed his plans in an interview with CNN earlier in the day.
He will hold town halls with employees at each division next week.
Stankey is succeeding longtime Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes. He said his focus as CEO will be on "business strategy, distribution, technology/platforms and capital allocation."
While reassuring employees that many things won't change, he said WarnerMedia will need to develop "some new plays" to keep up with a fast-changing industry.
Competitors like Netflix and Amazon have put tremendous pressure on entrenched players like HBO.
Stankey's memo on Friday acknowledged that there are impending layoffs in corporate departments of the former Time Warner.
He said the three main divisions "will see little change," but "many of the redundant corporate support functions between our companies at the HQ/holding company level will be eliminated in the coming months."

Continuing plunge of CNN, MSNBC ratings reveals that fake news is a bad business strategy
By Thomas Lifson
The catastrophic ratings decline for both CNN and MSNBC was no temporary blip following publication of the Mueller report.
Both cable news outlets had heavily promoted the hoax of Russian collusion with the Trump administration, teasing the hopes of Trump-haters for impeachment and prosecution for treason. Now, those disappointed viewers have gone away, and continue to stay away.
The most dramatic decline was in the prized demo, age 25 – 54, with MSNBC down 42% and CNN down 43%. Advertisers are getting barely more than half as many potential consumers watching their ads in both cable news outlets.
To be fair, last year was an election year, and Fox News also experienced a decline of 22%, but that is roughly half the decline of the two progressive outlets.
Fox News lost the crown of the most-viewed cable channel to ESPN, which benefitted from the NBA playoffs.
Overall cable channels rankings:
- ESPN (2,720,000)
- Fox News Channel (2,333,000)
- TNT (2,123,000)

Both CNN and MSNBC are subsidiaries of large publicly-held corporations, AT&T and Comcast, respectively. It is time for the grown-ups at the corporate level to recognize that each of their subsidiaries have adopted a losing business strategy of focusing on left-wing propaganda, a declining market niche. Shareholders need to demand that existing management be replaced at both cable news operations. They have squandered their credibility and need to provide former viewers with visible evidence that they have learned their lessons.
The move of CNN’s New York operations from Columbus Circle to Hudson Yards has already been used as an excuse to lay off more than a hundred staffers, a typical move of companies in decline. But that cost-saving measure will not persuade former viewers to return, much less add new viewers. Firing Jeff Zucker, head of CNN who was promoted by AT&T and given broader responsibilities, would be a visible sign that corporate understands the need to change and to win back lost viewers.
