More than half of recent job growth nationwide reflects workers going it alone, but much ‘self-employment’ is something less benign

‘There are tales of hotel chambermaids and shepherds being told to pack their bags, and then come back as hired guns to grab work as and when their former employers require it.’
Every month, it seems at the moment, the unemployment numbers are surprisingly good. Every month, too, however, there are also new caveats to attach to the claims about “more people in jobs than ever before”.
The first reservation – and the one you can’t have failed to notice, unless you’re in a singularly lucky line of work – is depressed pay. Wages have been squeezed harder, for longer, than at any time since the 1860s. You’ve probably heard, too, about zero-hours contracts, “perma-temping” and the army of part-timers hungry for more hours. All of these problems, in different ways, obviously contribute insecurity to working life. But the latest sign that the jobs of the present are different from the jobs of the past is harder to read – namely, the vast post-recession growth in self-employment.
More than half of recent job growth nationwide reflects workers going it alone. And in some regions away from London and the south-east, extra self-employment constitutes all the jobs growth there has been. Some of this may, perhaps, reflect the entrepreneurial spirit that ministers would like to imagine is seizing the nation. One genuinely positive aspect appears to be a growing band of professional sixtysomethings reinventing themselves as consultants after retirement.
But much of this apparent “freelancing” appears to represent something less benign. There are tales of hotel chambermaids and shepherds being told to pack their bags, and then come back as hired guns to grab work as and when their former employers require it.
For some at the bottom of the pile, at least, the line between zero-hours working and self-employment is getting blurry. And official figures record that average self-employed earnings are down by 22% in real terms since 2008, compared with the pay drop of around 8% for the typical employee.
If this is the most important change in the labour market right now, you might have thought the government would be especially concerned to smooth the rough financial edges of freelancing on low pay. Instead, the forensic campaigners at Gingerbread point out, tax credits which treated the self-employed generously are being replaced by a universal credit that adopts a tougher approach. Rather than looking at what profit a struggling sole trader actually makes, the new system simply assumes that they bring home at least the equivalent 35 hours at the minimum wage, and calculates entitlement on that basis.
What about the struggling window cleaner who can only find a few hours, or indeed the hotel chambermaid who’s been reluctantly reinvented as a business? The government’s official advice leaflet assumes an unusually blunt tone: “If you earn less than the minimum income floor in any month, universal credit will not bridge that gap. This will encourage you to grow your business.”
The origin of the change is not just mean-spirited spite: the Treasury had reasonable concerns about overpaying tax credits to some of the self-employed. Taxi drivers, for example, appeared to receive more than could be justified, and the old, disregarded rules gave the benefit of the doubt to those whose incomes bobbed up and down. Some restrictions are needed to avoid subsidising hobbyists, who keep a few hens and sell their eggs, as if they were doing a full-time job.
It is true, too, that the 35-hour assumption is not imposed during the first year of self-employment, and that it can be flexed for the likes of lone parents, for whom it might only be practical to do shorter hours.
However, some families look set to lose out because public policy and private industry are pushing the same way. At a time when some businesses are turning employees into unwilling freelancers, case workers report jobcentres encouraging unemployed people to sign off and set up businesses without any real thought about whether they’ve got a viable plan. There is a double whammy in the making here. First, the jobcentre inappropriately pushes you into a “self-employed” business that doesn’t stack up; then the benefits bureaucrats tot up your reduced universal credit on the assumption that this business is keeping you gainfully employed full-time.
Who are those workers in US FOREIGN ECONOMIC ZONES losing jobs over and over----told to be entrepreneurs only to lose those small businesses just as they start to earn some profit? Not only our new to US 99% of immigrants ---but those long-term unemployed US 99% of WE THE PEOPLE.

Poway synagogue shooting: Congregants heed call to 'fill the synagogue' days after tragedy

Don Jr. weighs the decision to comply with a subpoena to appear again before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Sen.Graham offers some legal advice.
POWAY, Calif. – Congregants at the Chabad of Poway heeded a call to "fill the synagogue" on Friday night, nearly one week after a deadly synagogue shooting at the Southern California house of worship.
As some congregants walked to a unity service and dinner, they passed community members holding signs of support. Drivers honked horns in agreement.
"It's a community that comes together, and this type of hatred can't take over who we are. It's not welcome here," said Leslie Talansky, who was holding a sign that said "Poway Strong."
Law enforcement officers were clearly visible in the area surrounding the synagogue. Multiple street corners were lined with flowers; signs were left with messages such as "Share love and kindness."
Last Saturday – the last day of Passover – a gunman entered Chabad of Poway and opened fire, killing one person and inuring three others. Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein was among those injured.
Goldstein has publicly urged Jews to respond to the tragedy by becoming more devoted to their faith.
"From here on in I am going to be more brazen," he wrote in a New York Times opinion piece on Monday. "And I’m going to use my voice until I am hoarse to urge my fellow Jews to do Jewish. To light candles before Shabbat. To put up mezuzas on their doorposts. To do acts of kindness. And to show up in synagogue – especially this coming Shabbat."
Global banking goals of killing strong US public K-university broad schooling for all 99% WE THE PEOPLE started moving with parents moving children out of public schools for this reason---that reason-----home-schooling being the answer-----then charters pretending to be community schools while being made GLOBAL CORPORATE SCHOOLS----brought more and more reasons to take children out of our BRICK AND MORTAR public schools. What moves parents to take children out of our US brick and mortar public schools more then all this VIOLENCE?
When we frame these social FADS of violence to these goals of global banking it is easy peasy to see these SHOOTINGS said to be individual MADMEN as children/or haters just as HITLER/STALIN were labeled MADMEN when they simply worked for global banking 1% OLD WORLD KINGS KNIGHTS OF MALTA---TRIBE OF JUDAH.
Please think from where these SHOOTERS are coming----are they being GROOMED to create this violence? Is it really anti-seminism/anti-christian or is it simply the goal of global banking to END ALL OUR WESTERN ORGANIZED RELIGIONS?
THE GOAL OF ENDING OUR WESTERN RELIGIONS IS WHAT BRINGS THIS VIOLENCE IN CHURCHES/MOSQUES/SYNAGOGUES-----NOT HATERS.
We are not saying there are not HATERS----we are saying these are organized violence orchestrated to fuel population tensions.

'Cultural Marxism': a uniting theory for rightwingers who love to play the victim
The culture war that so defines current debates between the left and right sides of politics has its history in the barmy theory of ‘cultural Marxism’
Sun 18 Jan 2015 19.48 EST Last modified on Tue 13 Mar 2018 13.37 EDT
What do the Australian’s columnist Nick Cater, video game hate group #Gamergate, Norwegian mass shooter Anders Breivik and random blokes on YouTube have in common?
Apart from anything else, they have all invoked the spectre of “cultural Marxism” to account for things they disapprove of – things like Islamic immigrant communities, feminism and, er, opposition leader Bill Shorten.
What are they talking about?
The tale varies in the telling, but the theory of cultural Marxism is integral to the fantasy life of the contemporary right. It depends on a crazy-mirror history, which glancingly reflects things that really happened, only to distort them in the most bizarre ways.
It begins in the 1910s and 1920s. When the socialist revolution failed to materialise beyond the Soviet Union, Marxist thinkers like Antonio Gramsci and Georg Lukacs tried to explain why. Their answer was that culture and religion blunted the proletariat’s desire to revolt, and the solution was that Marxists should carry out a “long march through the institutions” – universities and schools, government bureaucracies and the media – so that cultural values could be progressively changed from above.
Adapting this, later thinkers of the Frankfurt School decided that the key to destroying capitalism was to mix up Marx with a bit of Freud, since workers were not only economically oppressed, but made orderly by sexual repression and other social conventions. The problem was not only capitalism as an economic system, but the family, gender hierarchies, normal sexuality – in short, the whole suite of traditional western values.
The conspiracy theorists claim that these “cultural Marxists” began to use insidious forms of psychological manipulation to upend the west. Then, when Nazism forced the (mostly Jewish) members of the Frankfurt School to move to America, they had, the story goes, a chance to undermine the culture and values that had sustained the world’s most powerful capitalist nation.
The vogue for the ideas of theorists like Herbert Marcuse and Theodor Adorno in the 1960s counterculture culminated with their acolytes’ occupation of the commanding heights of the most important cultural institutions, from universities to Hollywood studios. There, the conspiracy says, they promoted and even enforced ideas which were intended to destroy traditional Christian values and overthrow free enterprise: feminism, multiculturalism, gay rights and atheism. And this, apparently, is where political correctness came from. I promise you: this is what they really think.
The whole story is transparently barmy. If humanities faculties are really geared to brainwashing students into accepting the postulates of far-left ideology, the composition of western parliaments and presidencies and the roaring success of corporate capitalism suggests they’re doing an astoundingly bad job. Anyone who takes a cool look at the last three decades of politics will think it bizarre that anyone could interpret what’s happened as the triumph of an all-powerful left.
The theory of cultural Marxism is also blatantly antisemitic, drawing on the idea of Jews as a fifth column bringing down western civilisation from within, a racist trope that has a longer history than Marxism.
Like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the theory was fabricated to order, for a special purpose: the institution and perpetuation of culture war. We can even nominate an author for this lunacy: William S Lind, a polymath of the American hard right, who sought to put rightwing activism on a new footing as the cold war drew to a close.
In the late 1980s, Lind wrote a couple of monographs arguing that there was an emerging mainstream political consensus on free-market economics (due in part to the “disarray” of the traditional social-democratic left), but that many Americans across the political spectrum were dismayed by the decline in traditional values, the family and middle-class life. If conflict with the left could be shifted to the ground of culture, there was a chance of binding the right and even claiming some socially conservative voters who had traditionally voted for the Democrats.
When the Berlin Wall fell, it was time for Lind’s strategy of “cultural conservatism” to become a central strategy for US Republicans: it identified a new kind of social enemy for the right to mobilise against. The changing parameters of economic debate and the beginning of American decline demanded that conservatives embrace a politics “centred more, not less, on cultural issues” – the family, education, crime and morality. The fairytale of cultural Marxism provided a post-communist adversary located specifically in the cultural realm – academics, Hollywood, journalists, civil rights activists and feminists. It has been a mainstay of conservative activism and rhetoric ever since.
While Lind has recently become a more marginal figure, his story of cultural Marxism has proved durable and useful across the spectrum of right-wing thought because it offers so much.
It allows those smarting from a loss of privilege to be offered the shroud of victimhood, by pointing to a shadowy, omnipresent, quasi-foreign elite who are attempting to destroy all that is good in the world. It offers an explanation for the decline of families, small towns, patriarchal authority, and unchallenged white power: a vast, century-long left wing conspiracy. And it distracts from the most important factor in these changes: capitalism, which demands mobility, whose crises have eroded living standards, and which thus, among other things, undermines the viability of conventional family structures and the traditional lifestyles that conservatives approve of.
The story of cultural Marxism is also flexible and can be tailored to fit with the obsessions of a range of right-wing actors. As such, it’s one example of an idea from the extremes which has been mobilised by more mainstream figures and has dragged politics as a whole a little further right.
Anders Breivik killed young social democrats because he believed that their party was involved in a cultural Marxist plot to undermine traditional European values by means of mass immigration from the Islamic world. Prominent voices in the #Gamergate movement have invoked it to warn of what is really motivating the feminist and queer critics of game aesthetics and culture – a desire to purge the culture of “proper” masculine values. It can even chime with Cater’s dreary, pedestrian moaning about how a “graduate class” seeks to remodel authentic, “egalitarian” Australian culture.
The idea of a cultural Marxist conspiracy has also endured because, in the absence of a genuine clash of ideas about the way the economy should be run, it provides an animating idea for the political contest. For Cater to claim that Bill Shorten is a Marxist of any kind is laughable precisely because to the extent that the opposition leader is explicitly offering anything, it’s plainly just a slightly more cushioned version of the same underlying economic orthodoxy embraced by Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey. Until that changes, the right will always be able to offer their story of victimhood and conspiracy with some hope of success.

7 dead in shooting at Oakland religious school
April 2, 2012 / 9:29 PM / CBS/AP
Updated 9:29 p.m. ET
(CBS/AP) OAKLAND, Calif. - A gunman opened fire at a Christian university in California Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding as many as 3 more, authorities said. Police say they have a suspect in custody.
Police have identified the suspect as a 43-year-old Oakland man named One L. Goh, who is in custody after surrendering at a shopping center about an hour after the shooting at Oikos University on Monday morning.
Authorities say he was a former student at the Christian school.
The deadly shooting erupted around 10:30 a.m. at Oikos University in Oakland, according to officials.
Police in nearby Alameda told KCBS that the suspected gunman was taken into custody in the parking lot of the Safeway store at about 12:20 p.m.
Police believe the shooter acted alone, though they have not discussed a possible motive. Those connected to the school, including the founder and several students, described the gunman as a former nursing student.
Officer Johnna Watson said the suspect is an Asian male in his 40s and was taken into custody at a shopping center in the neighboring city of Alameda. Watson would not confirm if he was a student.
Watson said most of the wounded or dead were shot inside the building. The industrial park in which the school is located also includes the county food bank and a local Girl Scouts headquarters.
Authorities earlier described him as a heavyset Korean man in his 40s wearing khaki clothing. "I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Watson said.
KTVU-TV reported that the shooter opened fire in a classroom.
Following the shootings, CBS San Francisco video showed a chaotic scene as heavily armed SWAT officers swarmed into the building and bloodied victims were carried out on stretchers and loaded into ambulances. Several bodies covered in sheets were laid out on a patch of grass.
Police also evacuated nearby businesses, and agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms arrived at the scene to assist with the investigation.
Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, told the Oakland Tribune that the shooter was a nursing student who was no longer enrolled. He did not know if the shooter was expelled or dropped out. Kim said he heard about 30 rapid-fire gunshots in the building.
"I stayed in my office," he said.
Deborah Lee, who was in an English language class at the time, said she heard five to six gunshots at first. "The teacher said, `Run,' and we run," she said. "I was OK, because I know God protects me. I'm not afraid of him."
Angie Johnson told the San Francisco Chronicle that she saw a young woman leave the building with blood coming from her arm and crying: "I've been shot. I've been shot."
The injured woman said the shooter was a man in her nursing class who got up and shot one person at point-blank range in the chest before spraying the room with bullets, Johnson said.
"She said he looked crazy all the time," Johnson said the victim told her, "but they never knew how far he would go."
Four victims arrived at Highland Hospital for treatment, said spokeswoman Jerri Randrup.
According to its website, Oikos University offers studies in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine. A telephone message left on the university's voicemail was not immediately returned.

Homeschooling skyrockets as more parents get fed up with Left-wing social engineering and violence in public schools
Tuesday, June 05, 2018 by: JD Heyes
(Natural News) Thanks to the incessant Left-wing counter-culture social engineering and increasing levels of violence and bullying, more American parents are pulling their kids out of failing government schools and teaching them at home.
As reported by The Washington Times, the recent school shooting at Parkland, Fla., was the last straw for scores of parents. The paper noted that “the phones started ringing at the Texas Home School Coalition, and they haven’t stopped yet.”
The Times added:
The Lubbock-based organization has been swamped with inquiries for months from parents seeking safer options for their kids in the aftermath of this year’s deadly school massacres, first in Parkland and then in Santa Fe, Texas.
“When the Parkland shooting happened, our phone calls and emails exploded,” said coalition president Tim Lambert. “In the last couple of months, our numbers have doubled. We’re dealing with probably between 1,200 and 1,400 calls and emails per month, and prior to that it was 600 to 700.”
While the debate rages anew over familiar topics following such tragedies — tougher, more restrictive gun control laws and bolstering security at public schools — the revolution in homeschooling has been taking place quietly, behind the scenes and off the radar screens of most political organizations.
But again, it’s not just the shootings, which admittedly have increased in the past couple of years. Christopher Chin, head of Homeschool Louisiana, told The Times that parents are fed up with “the violence, the bullying, the unsafe environments.”
Much of this is due to outright negligence on the part of local government-controlled schools. In the case of Parkland, for instance, the accused shooter — Nikolas Cruz — was a known threat to the community (and the FBI), but he was nevertheless placed in an Obama-era program called PROMISE, which was originally aimed at shielding “minority” school kids from arrest and prosecution for certain crimes.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Superintendent Robert Runcie initially said that no, Cruz wasn’t in the program — which was a lie. He was.
“One of the things we’ve seen definitely an uptick in the last five years is the aspect of violence. It’s the bullying. That is off the charts,” Chin told The Times, citing a primary reason parents are more concerned today than ever about leaving their kids in a public school.
The Left is driving more kids OUT of public schools
There is also the Left-wing social engineering. The craziness over transgender students and bathrooms/locker rooms, allowing students to “take a knee” during the playing of the National Anthem, the Left-wing curriculum, and refusing to allow students to wear shirts that praise POTUS Trump or feature the American flag are also driving parents into homeschooling.
The violence, though, is the biggest issue.
Brian D. Ray, who heads up the National Home Education Research Institute, in Salem, Oregon, who’s conducted homeschooling research for 33 years, told The Times that concern over school safety has reached the top of the charts for most parents.
The times noted:
He said the top three reasons that parents choose homeschooling are a desire to provide religious instruction or different values than those offered in public schools; dissatisfaction with the academic curriculum, and worries about the school environment.
“Most parents homeschool for more than one reason,” Ray told the paper. “But when we ask families why do they homeschool, near the top nowadays is concern about the environment of schools, and that includes safety, pressure to get into drugs, pressure to get into sexual activity. It includes all of that.”
In 2017, the U.S. Department of Education estimated that 1.69 million kids between the ages of 5 and 17 were homeschooled, based on spring 2016 numbers. And that data comes just from the 15 states that track homeschooling, as well as Maricopa County, Arizona (Phoenix).
That number is only going to increase unless the Trump administration can reverse decades of Alt-Left manipulation.
Anyone still believing MARXISM is the OPIUM of the people-----as this article suggests ------the brutality of any installation of MARXISM before and after is HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF------the only opium for the masses is orchestrated DRUG ADDICTIONS used by global banking 1% to weaken civil society to install these far-right wing authoritarian structures.
Our US right wing as is WASHINGTON TIMES built those FOREIGN ECONOMIC ZONES inside CHINA------creating HYPER-NEO-LIBERALISM wealth for a global 1% and their 2% while making 99% of Chinese victims of these political schemes. Today's NEO-CONS as today's NEO-LIBERALS-----as today's OUR REVOLUTION are all working to not only bring MAOIST CULTURAL MARXISM to US----but to assure this structure is as BRUTAL AND REPRESSIVE as it can get.
THINK HOME-SCHOOLING WILL LEAD TO FAMILIES HAVING MORE CHOICE AND FREEDOM TO TEACH THEIR OWN CHILDREN----RACE TO TOP/COMMONER CORE WILL MAKE SURE THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN.
So, NOSY NEIGHBORS AND THE GANG as criminal black market SEX PREDATOR networks are indeed pushing our US 99% black, white, adn brown citizens into a social class that for thousands of years have been the BOTTOM OF THE BARREL......................................
'The issue, Banks believes, stems from the stigma society places on sex work and the porn industry. “There are people who probably respect drug dealers, that shoot and kill people, more than they do sex workers,” she says, “because sex is so negatively viewed still by such a large percentage of the country'.
When a US citizen allows he/she to be pushed into these lowest of low economic structures like NOSY NEIGHBORS AND THE GANG-----who indeed are the same as DRUG DEALERS in our communities----they are staging their own DEMISE.
Marxism: The opium of the Chinese masses
By Miles Yu - - Thursday, October 15, 2015
Last week, Beijing hosted the inaugural “World Congress on Marxism,” accompanied by much celebratory fanfare in the capital city. Over 400 luminaries, government officials and scholars from the United States, Egypt, Cuba, North Korea and more than a dozen other countries were flown in for the proletarian extravaganza. The event lasted for two days and it will be held every other year in Beijing, the newly self-anointed center of global Marxism studies.
The event was hosted by Peking University, China’s flagship higher education institution, through which Marxism first came to China soon after the 1917 Bolshevik revolution in Russia. In addition to being the permanent host of the biennial World Congress on Marxism, the university broke ground in May for the Congress’s “Karl Marx Building,” to be completed in 2017.
Peking University has also funded a half-dozen major research groups known as “The Six Projects on Marxism” and created an official flagship website on Marxism as a central depository for research. The Chinese government has just announced that it will devote a large amount of money and manpower over the next 20 years to building the world’s largest collection of materials related to Karl Marx and Marxism.
The world’s largest and most disciplined political party, the Chinese Communist Party enjoys a total monopoly of state power and claims as its founding principle Marxism and its various mutations, such as Leninism and Maoism.
“The realization of communism is the highest ideal and ultimate goal of the Party,” says the Chinese Communist Party’s charter, as printed in the People’s Daily Online, “Marxism-Leninism brings to light the laws governing the development of the history of human society. … So long as the Chinese Communists uphold the basic tenets of Marxism-Leninism and follow the road suited to China’s specific conditions and chosen by the Chinese people of their own accord, the socialist cause in China will be crowned with final victory.”
It’s not just empty talk. Marxism is highly relevant to everyday life in the world’s most populous country, a mandatory curricular course taught at every level of the education system from kindergarten to graduate school. Tens of millions of devoted “political teachers” in the schools, unknown millions of “ideological workers” at every level of the society, and the ubiquitous “political commissars” in the People’s Liberation Army — they all collectively serve as the official clergy of Marxism. President and party General Secretary Xi Jinping, who earned a doctorate in “scientific socialism” from the prestigious Tsinghua University, heads the order, whose avowed mission it is to bring the world’s proletariat to the
to the communist nirvana. Average citizens hoping to live a successful life in today’s China must aspire to become a Party member as a symbol of success and a golden ticket to power and privilege; when one dies, one is said to be going to “meet Marx.”
The two-day event, however, was not without some discordant notes.
An American Marxism scholar from California asked whether Karl Marx would censor scholars and prohibit certain taboo subjects from being discussed. A Harvard scholar gave the keynote speech in which he challenged the popularity of Marxism in China and touched on quite a few taboo topics, including the Tiananmen pro-democracy movement of 1989. He further criticized Mr. Xi’s ambitious China Dream agenda as not “intellectually coherent, robust and wide-ranging philosophy needed to stand up to Western ideas.”
To counter these incorrect thoughts, Liang Zhu, former vice president of Peking University and a fundamentalist Marxist, lambasted Chinese intellectuals’ “fantasy and illusion about imperialism” and proclaimed that the international communist movement would not be able to withstand the blow if it were defeated in China.
The World’s Congress on Marxism ended Sunday with a “Statement of Common Understanding” which reads in part: “Marxism is the light guiding today’s international community plagued with various complicated troubles to escape mankind’s predicament [and] march toward a bright future.”
Popular reaction to the event is hard to gauge, but oblique mockery of the proceedings abounds. A contrarian undergraduate student asked a panel how Marxist theory explained Mao’s decision to launch the bloody Cultural Revolution. A renowned academic suggested in his blog that the nation should use Marxism to study China’s murderous Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, the genocide perpetrated by Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge and the pogroms in the Soviet Union.
Perhaps the most surreal reaction, one that has gone viral on China’s Internet, is the image of two serendipitously juxtaposed headlines purportedly appearing in Monday’s Party newspaper, the Guangming Daily. The headline on the left reads “The Voice of Marxism Penetrates through History,
Ushers in the Future;” while the one on the right is, “We Should Help the Mentally Ill Return Home.”
The difference between people wanting and choosing to sell THEMSELVES as sex industry people is the OPPOSITE of making innocent people not CONSENTING into PORN or SEX SLAVES----

Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act
Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act
SESTA: "To amend the Communications Act of 1934 to clarify that section 230 of that Act does not prohibit the enforcement against providers and users of interactive computer services of Federal and State criminal and civil law relating to sex trafficking."
FOSTA: "A bill to amend the Communications Act of 1934 to clarify that section 230 of such Act does not prohibit the enforcement against providers and users of interactive computer services of Federal and State criminal and civil law relating to sexual exploitation of children or sex trafficking, and for other purposes."
The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) and Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) are the U.S. Senate and House bills that as the FOSTA-SESTA package became law on April 11, 2018. They clarify the country's sex trafficking law to make it illegal to knowingly assist, facilitate, or support sex trafficking, and amend the Section 230 safe harbors of the Communications Decency Act (which make online services immune from civil liability for the actions of their users) to exclude enforcement of federal or state sex trafficking laws from its immunity. Senate sponsor Rob Portman had previously led an investigation into the online classifieds service Backpage (which had been accused of facilitating child sex trafficking), and argued that Section 230 was protecting its "unscrupulous business practices" and was not designed to provide immunity to websites that facilitate sex trafficking.
Unfiltered: ‘Society treats sex workers as second-class citizens’
Brian Prowse-Gany and Joyzel Acevedo
Yahoo News•April 25, 2018
As a prominent face in the world of adult entertainment, sex worker Ginger Banks has endured her share of insults and discrimination: “When I read comments on articles about sexual assault happening to sex workers, it breaks my heart. Because a lot of the people say, ‘Well, she’s a sex worker. She gets f***ed for money. Why can’t I grab her right now?’”
“Which makes no sense. If you are going to run into a UFC fighter on the street, you’re not going to punch him in the face and say, ‘That’s your job,’ right?”
Following a recent string of deaths by suicide and drug overdose among female adult-film actresses, including the popular performer August Ames, Banks has spoken out about the damaging and discriminatory treatment sex workers in the industry regularly face. The issue, Banks believes, stems from the stigma society places on sex work and the porn industry.
“There are people who probably respect drug dealers, that shoot and kill people, more than they do sex workers,” she says, “because sex is so negatively viewed still by such a large percentage of the country. … There are mothers who have had their children taken away from them because they are sex workers, there are banks and other institutions that have shut down sex workers’ accounts.”
“We’re all just people who want to provide for themselves and for their families.”
In this latest episode of “Unfiltered,” adult-film actress Ginger Banks explains why porn stars need more support for the kind of work they do — both within the industry and in society at large.
The 27-year-old has worked in the sex industry for eight years, first finding success as a webcam model and most recently having filmed a big-budget XXX feature. She was a chemical engineering student when she made the decision to pursue webcamming full-time, a choice that shocked her father. “When my dad found out, he immediately said, ‘Is someone forcing you to do this?’” she recalls, “Because it’s easier to think of that and accept that, than it is to realize that your independent, intelligent daughter decided to go into the sex work industry.”
It took time for Banks to get past her shame: “When I was lying about my job as a sex worker, that’s when I was the most depressed. Because deep down I knew there was nothing wrong with being a sex worker, but I had to hide it and I had to lie to people about my job. And that made me feel terrible.”
Now, with the new Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act and the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act, known as the FOSTA-SESTA bill, signed by President Trump on April 11, 2018, Banks believes the struggles many sex workers face will not only increase, it will also “cause [them] to die.” “Full-service sex workers are already at a higher risk of being murdered due to their job,” explains Banks. “And taking away their resources to screen through violent clients is just going to make that worse.”
Banks also feels that the new law will hurt those who are involuntarily trafficked into the industry. “If we make it safe for people to do sex work,” she asserts, “We are going to be making it safer for these people to come forward who are being forced into this industry.”
Ultimately, Banks wants sex workers to be treated fairly and with respect, “My goal in life is to help change the stigma surrounding sex workers. … We are just like any other part of society,” she says. “It is important to see us as people, because that’s what we are.”

Church Shootings Are Becoming Much More Common
Yet the existing data suggests churches aren't more or less vulnerable to gun violence than other publicly accessible spaces.
Nov 6, 2017
When criminologist Dallas Drake and two interns first searched for church shootings in the United States, they found 137 instances between 1980 and 2005, the majority of them causing no deaths. More recently, Drake decided to update the database, and found a disturbing trend: There were more shootings in Christian churches between 2006 and 2016—147 of them—than in the 25 years prior. (The database does not include non-Christian houses of worship, such as mosques or synagogues.)
In the wake of a shooting on Sunday that left 26 dead in a small church in rural Sutherland Springs, Texas, Drake's research helps answer some questions about shootings in churches, which would seem to be particularly vulnerable in that they are often welcoming to any passerby. Yet the data suggests churches aren't any more or less likely to be sites of gun violence in the U.S. than other publicly accessible spaces. "It's almost that there isn't any place that's not at risk," says Drake, the senior researcher at the Center for Homicide Research, an independent non-profit based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Overall, Drake has found mass shootings in churches to be quite rare. Between 1980 and 2005, he and his team found only seven shootings in which four or more people died. The existing results echo numbers about deadly shootings in the U.S. overall, the large majority of which kill just one person. In addition, the most common reason for shootings in churches is intimate partner violence, which accounted for 17 percent of the events recorded by the Center for Homicide Research. Another 14 percent of events were recorded as having an "unknown" reason.
Overall in America, domestic violence accounts for 40 to 45 percent of shooting homicides carried out against girls and women aged 15 and over, and 2 percent of boys and men. The motive for the Sutherland Springs shooter is still not known.
Drake and his team haven't finished analyzing their 2006–16 data yet, so they don't know those shootings' death counts or circumstances. The researchers also don't know exactly why shootings have gone up so drastically in Christian churches in America over the last decade. Drake has an idea, however. "I think that, as a society, we're giving too much attention and credit to offenders," he says. "We need to stop naming the offender over and over again and showing the photograph. We need to stop saying, 'This is the worst shooting in X number of years,' because that just gives potential shooters a mark to try to beat." Research does show that media coverage can inspire copycat crimes in the two weeks that follow a mass shooting.
Drake points out that, considering the number of churches in the U.S. and their open nature, church shootings remain rare. In fact, gun homicides in America have declined a lot since the 1990s, with numbers stabilizing in recent years, although they're still much higher in the U.S. than in other high-income countries. And the individual tragedy remains. "Everybody is pretty grief-stricken," one Sutherland Springs resident told the New York Times. "Everyone's worried."
In that small community, the known death toll from the First Baptist Church shooting would amount to about 7 percent of the population.
