Google has patented a new technology that would let the company inject a computerized lens directly into your eyeball.The company has been developing smart glasses and even smart contact lenses for years. But Google's newest patented technology would go even further -- and deeper.
(Note: the squeamish should skip to the next paragraph.)
In its patent application, which the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approved last week, Google says it could remove the lens of your eye, inject fluid into your empty lens capsule and then place an electronic lens in the fluid.
Once equipped with your cyborg lenses, you would never need glasses or contacts again. In fact, you might not even need a telescope or a microscope again. And who needs a camera when your eyes can capture photos and videos?
The artificial, computerized lenses could automatically adjust to help you see objects at a distance or very close by. The lenses could be powered by the movement of your eyeball, and they could even connect to a nearby wireless device.
Google says that its patented lenses could be used to cure presbyopia, an age-related condition in which people's eyes stiffen and their ability to focus is diminished or lost. It could also correct common eye problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism.
Today, we cure blurry vision with eyeglasses or contact lenses. But sometimes vision is not correctable.
And there are clear advantages to being a cyborg with mechanical eyes.
Yet Google (GOOGL) noted that privacy could become a concern. If your computerized eyes are transmitting data all the time, that signal could allow law enforcement or hackers to identify you or track your movements. Google said that it could make the mechanical lenses strip out personally identifying information so that your information stays secure.
Before you sign up for cyborg eyes, it's important to note that Google and many other tech companies patent technologies all the time. Many of those patented items don't end up getting made into actual products. So it's unclear if Google will ever be implanting computers into your eyes -- soon or ever.

The recent boom in the Internet of Things (IoT) will turn Smart Cities and Smart Homes (SH) from hype to reality. SH is the major building block for Smart Cities and have long been a dream for decades, hobbyists in the late 1970s made Home Automation (HA) possible when personal computers started invading home spaces. While SH can share most of the IoT technologies, there are unique characteristics that make SH special. From the result of a recent research survey on SH and IoT technologies, this paper defines the major requirements for building SH. Seven unique requirement recommendations are defined and classified according to the specific quality of the SH building blocks.
The term “Internet of Things” first appeared in 1999 when Ashton  presented a report on Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) to Procter and Gamble. The idea of automatic data collection using RFID and sensing technology, together with the continuous development on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) architectures, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and semantic technologies have enabled IoT to blossom. Cisco has predicted that 50 billions of Things will be connected to the Internet by 2020, likely to be 6.58 times more than the estimated world population . Holler et al.  pointed out that the major reason for IoT to take off was the need to enable technologies at the right cost.

This paper discusses the latest SH research based on IoT technologies with the objective to classify them into a list of major requirement recommendations for building SH systems. Section 2 describes the latest sensor network technologies and proceeds to list the seven major requirements to build SH systems defined from this work. The challenges we have seen in meeting this requirements are discussed in Section 3. Finally a conclusion with future work is presented in Section 4.
2. Smart Home and Smart Cities
SH is the basic building block for Smart Cities, and the establishment of Smart Cities is a core enabler for the rapid global urbanisation. By 2050, 66% of the world population will be living in urban areas while the number of “mega-cities” with 10 millions inhabitants or more is expanding in the same pace.1 A people-centric design approach is adopted in building Smart Cities in order to share resources effectively and intelligently, however, provision of tailor-made services to individual inhabitants is difficult without collecting and learning personal behaviour in public spaces such as smart offices, smart factories, and public transport. SH is the best venue assisting Smart Cities to gain personal data when privacy protection is properly implemented.
SH and HA are used interchangeably in this paper and they refer to the applications of IoT technologies in the home environment. A high degree of heterogeneity makes the connections difficult due to many interfacing technologies available in the market. Things to be connected at home can be low-resource devices such as self-powered light-switches using energy harvesting as power source, or battery operated temperature sensors which wake up every ten minutes, or even fully equipped multi-core desktop Personal Computers (PCs) running 24-hour per day. Repetitiveness of control processes may vary from 100 times per day down to once per year.
The story of SH began in the late 1960s when computer amateurs started installing computers at home, and one of the famous home computers at that moment called ECHO-IV was installed by Sutherland for family bookkeeping, inventory taking, as well as house temperature control . When PCs appeared in the mass-market in the late 1970s , on-site controlling and automating of home appliances became Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects by hobbyists. Remote control was achieved by decoding Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) signals through telephone lines when a domestic Internet service was not yet generally available . Research in SH has been progressing but the real adoption is still very low. Greichen  described in 1992 the emergence of SH market was “just around the corner” after a decade of research and implementation. Nowadays, after passing another decade from Greichen’s work, we have not seen significant SH adoption yet and the high cost, difficult installation and unfriendly operations are still the main obstacles transforming the hype to reality.
2.1. Sensor networks for Smart Homes
The networking of Things such as sensors and actuators is the basic enabler for M2M connectivity. Things can be connected using wired or wireless technologies depending on the home environment. For a wireless connection, short range and long range radio links provide two different communication paradigms to fit for different system architectures.
Wired sensor networks connect Things with fixed wires which are not convenient in terms of installation and extensibility for future upgrade. Wiring may be required to form a home network for transmission of control data, and the network is usually in the form of bus structure such as CEBus, KNX2 and LonWorks. Data transmission over power lines eliminates the needs for running separate physical wires and is good for the retrofit market, Home Plug, Insteon and X10 are typical examples in this category. X10 has been popular in the DIY market since 1975 when Pico Electronics invented the protocol using power lines as data transmission medium . This technology has become a de-facto standard in SH for many years due to its ease-of-use, easy-of-install and easy-of-upgrade by plugging into any power outlet to form the SH net. The notoriously unstable performance due to power line interference prevents X10 to prevail in the SH market, however the high cost–performance-ratio still keeps X10 products in production. Ethernet, except the usage in setting up Local Area Network (LAN) for communication between computers, is also a good candidate for SH connectivity requiring high bandwidth such as high-end audio and video streaming at home. Many wired networks also provide wireless options to cope with the restriction on physical wiring, e.g. Wireless X10 and Wireless KNX.
While it is believed that more requirements will be revealed in the future when SH becomes more mature, the major requirements derived from this research are found to be:

Economic growth is rapidly becoming the biggest threat of the 21st Century.
Growth, especially in wealthy nations, is already causing more problems than it solves. These problems are grave: environmental destruction, economic instability, and international turmoil that threatens national security. Let’s start with the environment.
Think about how an economy is structured. There must be agricultural and extractive surplus for the manufacturing and services to proliferate, and this surplus must increase for the economy to grow. Meanwhile, environmental impact increases in step with agricultural and extractive production. The clearest example of this environmental impact is biodiversity loss, because the growing economy degrades and liquidates wildlife habitats. Virtually every environmental problem – air pollution, water shortage, climate change, etc. – can be traced to economic growth.
How can we have more and more jobs – billions more, perpetually more – on a finite planet? To think we can have perpetually more jobs on Earth is like thinking we can squeeze a billion jobs into a perpetually shrinking area! In fact these propositions are precisely, equally ludicrous.
Sustainable employment is all about establishing a steady state economy.
Furthermore, economic growth based on technological progress takes away as many jobs as it gives. Think about capital-intensive production with robots and automation. What’s the future in that?

Currently, our global economy is shaped by neoclassical economic theories. Economic growth is the principal macroeconomic policy goal of neoclassical economics.
The World Bank defines economic growth as:
“(The) quantitative change or expansion in a country’s economy. Economic growth is conventionally measured as the percentage increase in gross domestic product (GDP) or gross national product (GNP) during one year. Economic growth comes in two forms: an economy can either grow “extensively” by using more resources (such as physical, human, or natural capital) or “intensively” by using the same amount of resources more efficiently (productively). When economic growth is achieved by using more labor, it does not result in per capita income growth….
But when economic growth is achieved through more productive use of all resources, including labor, it results in higher per capita income and improvement in people’s average standard of living. Intensive economic growth requires economic development.”
More simply defined, economic growth is an increase in the production and consumption of goods and services.
Where economic growth is the predominant macroeconomic policy goal identified in neoclassical economics, ecological economics has a different policy goal. Ecological economics is a transdisciplinary field of study. It addresses the relationships between ecosystems and economic systems. In their 1989 Introduction to Ecological Economics, Costanza, Daly and Bartholomew explain that:
“…ecological economics goes beyond our normal conceptions of scientific disciplines and tries to integrate and synthesize many different disciplinary perspectives. One way it does this is by focusing more directly on the problems, rather than the particular intellectual tools and models used to solve them, and by ignoring arbitrary intellectual turf boundaries. No discipline has intellectual precedence in an endeavor as important as achieving sustainability. While the intellectual tools we use in this quest are important, they are secondary to the goal of solving the critical problems of managing our use of the planet.”
In addressing its concern for, “managing the use of our planet,” ecological economics has three primary goals: sustainability, equity, and efficiency. Therefore ecological economics considers economic growth and economic recession as unsustainable.
Lester Brown of The Worldwatch Institute presents at The Smithsonian’s 2012 series, Perspectives on the Limits to GrowthInstead, ecological economics proposes an alternative macroeconomic policy goal: a steady state economy. In a steady state economy there is a state (as in a political unit) where a constant population of people (or “labor”), constant stocks of capital, and a constant rate of energy and materials used to produce goods and services (or “throughput”), is maintained.
The Green Party of The United States, who advocate for a steady state economy, explains it as follows:
“Economic growth, as gauged by increasing Gross Domestic Product (GDP), is a dangerous and anachronistic American goal. The most viable and sustainable alternative is a steady-state economy. A steady-state economy has a stable or mildly fluctuating product of population and per capita consumption, and is generally indicated by stable or mildly fluctuating GDP. The steady-state economy has become a more appropriate goal than economic growth in the United States and other large, wealthy economies. A steady-state economy precludes ever-expanding production and consumption of goods and services. However, a steady-state economy does not preclude economic development – a qualitative process not gauged by GDP growth and other measures that overlook ecological effects.”
The Center for the Advancement of Steady State Economy (CASSE) simplifies the definition by stating that, “A steady state economy…aims for stable or mildly fluctuating levels in population and consumption of energy and materials. Birth rates equal death rates, and production rates equal depreciation rates.” Achieving a steady state economy would require adherence to four main rules:
- Maintain the health of ecosystems and the life-support services they provide.
- Extract renewable resources like fish and timber at a rate no faster than they can be regenerated.
- Consume non-renewable resources like fossil fuels and minerals at a rate no faster than they can be replaced by the discovery of renewable substitutes.
- Deposit wastes in the environment at a rate no faster than they can safely be assimilated.
Like The Green Party of The United States, CASSE is dedicated to advocating for the implementation of a steady state economy and therefore is an excellent source to begin a deeper study of the philosophy, historic roots, advantages, and how it can be implemented.
CASSE explains for 13 economic areas how a steady state economy would express itself. For example, in their Jobs and Business sector, CASSE explain, “An end of growth at the national scale means greater economic control at the local scale.” Jobs would be more secure and local businesses would be primary contributors to healthy communities.
Re-localization of services and production would give local communities renewed opportunity to reclaim some of the production and distribution processes that had been managed elsewhere in the global economy. Citizens will become involved in local investing, local entrepreneurship, and local businesses, leading to an economy that CASSE says will be more neighborly, more resilient, and more secure. With a backbone of sustainable local businesses, the economy would be less susceptible to outside disturbances, such as falling stock prices, dwindling oil supplies, or aging power grids. By developing and supporting local cooperative business ventures, citizens will keep wealth circulating in their communities, which CASSE says, “…will be marked by an enhanced sense of place and vitality”. The outcome would be a solid supply of local jobs and an enhanced sense of connectivity resulting from participation in the local economy.
Furthermore, CASSE asserts a steady state economy would have a stabilized population and so not need constant job creation. Because a steady state economy prioritizes efficient and sustainable use of materials and energy, the economy will not seek to replace labor with automated processes unless it is sustainable. People will be able to select from a variety of jobs, and the jobs will not disappear because of too much competition or off-shoring practices.
