When we interpret any cultural art piece we always think from where that artist family ties lie ---to consider the political bias. LYNCH we see today as that STAR on TV'S FAME-----here as a literary STAR. looking back and we see medieval LYNCH'S being archbishops in Britain/Ireland.....VERY global banking 1% OLD WORLD KINGS AND QUEENS. All novels flooding our US publications on life in ITALY are of course being written by our US and northern Europeans working to colonize ITALY. They wax romantic over all that is ITALIAN----family, community, simple life, ties to cultural history. They pretend they are honoring ITALY and its history while of course thinking all that they LOVE ---is backward and needs to MOVE FORWARD.
We can tell with ITALIAN PARTY that global banking 1% feels UNSTOPPABLE because they are freely discussing all the covert actions tied to accumulating wealth by those FORMER US IVY league universities. YALE this YALE that----boarding school boarding school boarding school. As has been true throughout CLINTON/BUSH/OBAMA ---what was really talented, creative writing has been captured to MYTH-MAKING AND PROPAGANDA. LYNCH does a good job superficially discussing Italian political and social divisions but does all a great dishonor.

Eduard Hornemann was the son of Elizabeth and Philip Hornemann. Eduard was born in 1932 in Eindhoven, Holland. Eduard’s family consisted of four known people, his mother, his dad, his younger brother Alexander, and himself. His father worked for the Philips Corporation and could provide the family with a great living area, because he was an executive there.
Eduard was eight years of age when the Germans occupied Holland in May of 1940. When the Nazis instituted harsh rules against Jewish the Hornemanns were exempted from many of the rules because of his fathers executive position with his company. After the Germans began running their death camps the Philips Corporation setup a special area to hide all of its Jewish employees, because most of the Philips Corporation employees were Jewish.
German troops surrounded the Philips Corporation plant in the hometown of the Hornemann in Eindhoven, Holland. All the Jewish employees were arrested and sent off to a camp. They were sent to a Dutch concentration camp in Vught. They were forced to work under many hard and harsh circumstances. Over 3,000 prisoners including the Jewish employees from the Phillips Corporation were put to at one of the Philips operation plants. The works that worked there were given extra rations of food and were given extra special privilege, so they could live with their wives and children. When a representatives from Philips Corporation came up to Mrs. Hornemann and told her that they the company could guarantee her family’s safety at the camp, but only if she and her kids were to join their dad at the camp. She felt that she had no choice but to go, and support her husband and their father.
There is not much to like about a novel with a goal of simply bringing back all that FAKE LEFT COMMUNISM/SOCIALISM, all that AMERICAN consumerism wrapped in CIA intrigue and merely rich jealous over not being extremely rich.
What we liked was the characters living in an OLD WORLD Siena-----having political affiliations tied to what was ITALIAN MEDIEVAL TRADE GUILDS and the beauty of the holidays of FLAGS where families inter-married from other Italian towns and cities carry on traditions once WARRIOR now simply cultural. The theme throughout was those 99% of Italian citizens refusing to give up traditions and those few Italians ready to get rich quick tied to CIA/AMERICAN consumer culture.
Siena's small town mayor as COMMUNIST----ROSSI was old school Italian communal politics. He loved his fellow citizens and culture and when global banking 5% freemason/Greek players wanted to take AGRICULTURAL Italy to INDUSTRIAL Italy ----the response was ----
I WILL NOT PUT THESE PEOPLE OUT OF WORK----I AM COMMITTED TO THE WELL-BEING OF EACH PERSON AS COMMUNITY.

We liked how the cultural history of Italy indeed tied to BEING SLY---corruption endemic for thousands of years with no one trusting government because after all ITALY has been sacked and looted for thousands of years. Yet, those Siena characters understood the difference between MAFIA/AND CRIMINALITY in that corruption when it goes TOO FAR. Trying to undermine local Italian elections a local game if played by local citizens---becomes deadly when played by global banking 5% freemason/Greek CIA players.
Italy while agricultural and communal is still steeped in OLD WORLD KINGS AND QUEENS patronage and caste structures. Not the same as our US REAL left social progressive capitalism or our US left communal communities.

The last time Times-Delta/Advance-Register caught up with New York Times bestselling author and College of the Sequoias English instructor Christina Lynch she didn’t have her own office on campus.
Some five years later, Lynch both has her own office on campus and another novel — “The Italian Party” published by St. Martin’s Press — hit bookstores on March 20.
The novel, set during the Cold War in Siena, Italy, combines history, romance and a dash of spycraft.
“It combines my passions,” Lynch said, as she sat in her office decorated with posters of book covers including “Catcher in the Rye” and “Fahrenheit 451” and a case overflowing with books.
Influential book review publication Publishers Weekly wrote the novel “plays like a confectionary Hollywood romance with some deeper notes reminiscent of John le Carré” while the Wall Street Journal spotlighted "The Italian Party" as a top winter pick. (Apparently, late March is still considered winter on the East Coast. Who knew?)

Lynch began her writing career as a fashion correspondent for W Magazine stationed in Milan, Italy. She then moved to Hollywood, where she landed writing and producing credits for TV shows "Married With Children," "The Dead Zone" and "Unhappily Ever After."
Lynch's first novel, "City of Dark Magic," which she co-wrote with Meg Howrey under the pseudonym Magnus Flyte, hit the New York Times Best Seller List in December 2012.
"Only for one week," Lynch humbly pointed out at the time.
The list collects sales data from independent book retailers, national, regional and local chains, online and multimedia entertainment retailers, supermarkets, university, gift and discount department stores and newsstands.The novels were a genre mashup of a Dan Brown-type historical thrillers, romantic comedies and travel guides to European cities.
The novel's sequel, "City of Lost Dreams," hit bookstores in November 2013. (Sad news for fans of Magnus Flyte, though. The series ended with the second novel.)
Lynch, who has lived in Three Rivers for nearly two decades, started an adjunct teaching job at COS in 2013. She became a full-time instructor at COS in 2015. She also teaches a web-based course for the University of California, Los Angeles.
“I love teaching,” said Lynch, who comes from a family of teachers. “It gives me energy and inspires me.”
She likes the camaraderie of the COS staff and her diverse group of students, who range from recent high school graduates to older students with families returning to school after a long hiatus, she said.
Besides enjoying teaching, there's a hard economic reality for her "day job," Lynch said.
Unless you are among the top 10 percent of authors, most writers supplement their income by teaching or freelancing, she said.
A new book is born
Lynch began researching and writing “The Italian Party” in the summer of 2013. Part of her research included listening to countless hours of books on tape histories of the CIA and European history as she commuted from her Three Rivers home to the COS campus.
“I’d be listening to a book about Allen Dulles (the first director of the CIA) or a book about Tuscany as I drove from the foothills into Visalia,” she said. “The contrast was sometimes strange.”
Take a quick look at “The Italian Party” book cover — it features a stylish couple on a Vespa — and the first thing that comes to mind is the beloved romantic classic “Roman Holiday” with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
“That’s intentional,” Lynch said. “I wanted to entice readers with that kind of romantic memory.”
Like most good novelists, though, Lynch aims to surprise her readers. Once enticed by the romantic elements of the novel, she throws in a healthy dose of history and thriller twists.
There are also some allusions to current affairs when she asks when (or if) is it appropriate for a foreign power to interfere in local elections.
“The American government really didn’t want the Italian Communists to win elections,” Lynch said. “It’s a fascinating time in recent history.”
Lynch in the classroom
While Lynch doesn’t belabor the fact she’s a New York Times Bestselling author in her classroom, she does discuss what it takes to be a professional writer with her students, especially aspiring student writers involved with COS’ literary magazine, for which she is the adviser.
“I really want to let my students know how writing is such hard work,” Lynch said. “Even published novelists get stuck, don’t feel like writing for a day or just stare at a blank page and think, ‘How am I going to start?’ ”
And she gives some blunt advice to students who want to pursue a career in writing or poetry, she said.
"I always ask them what are they going to do live on," Lynch said. "You're not going to pay the bills with poetry."
Over the years, she has also changed her strategy when assigning reading to her classes, she said. Instead of dictating what novels are read, she allows her students to vote as a group.
“I think it’s important that students read things that connect to their lives,” Lynch said. “The key is to keep them engaged and reading.”
She gives the same advice to parents of teenagers who have stopped reading for pleasure: Find out what subjects your teenager is interested and get them books on those topics.
“I think one of the joys of life is reading,” Lynch said. “Anything you can do to keep the reading habit going is something they’ll appreciate for the rest of their lives.”
One of Lynch’s dreams is to start her own independent bookstore — akin to what literary superstar Ann Patchett did in Nashville, Tennessee with Parnassus Books.
“Tulare County needs a bookstore again,” she said. “A place where people can browse and talk about books.”

The MODERNIZATION of Italian medieval culture does not fit with today's MOVING FORWARD ONE WORLD ONE GOVERNANCE for only the global 1%.
What do we see in Italy these few decades of Silvio Berlusconi----AKA CLINTON/BUSH/OBAMA? We see Italian sovereignty gone being filled with GLOBAL FACTORIES from ASIAN corporations bringing that 99% of labor pool living and working as they do in THIRD WORLD FOREIGN ECONOMIC ZONES. So, what those Sienese back in post-war ITALY fought to keep at bay-----ended killing just what those 99% of Italian citizens fought to maintain.

Siena's Palio Horce Race, four days of celebration

"Piazza del Campo" is still used today for the well known Palio horse race which is one of the most famous popular Italian manifestations. It takes place every year on July 2 and August 16. The Palio is run to celebrate the miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary near the old houses that belonged to Provenzano Salvani.
The holy apparition was therefore called "Madonna di Provenzano" in whose honour the very first Palio was run on August 16, 1656. The Palio was run for the first time in 1701 in honour of the "Madonna dell'Assunta" the patroness and Advocate of Siena through all the tragic events since she protected the Sienese militia at the famous battle of Monteaperti on September 4, 1260, against the Florentines.
The Palio is a historical secular tradition strictly connected with the origin of the Contradas of Siena (districts into which the town is divided). The Contradas are spectacular agonistic institutions each having their own government, oratory, coat of arms, appellations, sometimes titles of nobility, emblems and colours, official representatives, festivities, patron Saints, with protectors, delimited territories and population which consist of all those people who were born or live within the topographic limits of the district, according to the proclamation issued by Violante Beatrice of Bavaria on January 7, 1730, at that time, Governess of the town.
Originally, there were about fifty-nine "Contrade"; now only seventeen remain, ten of which take part in the historical pageant and in the race at each Palio (seven by right and three drawn by lots).
Here is a list of their names, emblems and colours grouped into "Terzi" or "Terzieri" (in olden times the town was divided into three sections called: "Terziere di Città", "Terziere di San Martino" and "Terziere di Camollia").

AQUILA (Eagle) a double-headed eagle with imperial symbols. Yellow with black and blue bands.
CHIOCCIOLA (Snail) a snail. Yellow and red with blue bands.
ONDA (Wave) a swimming dolphin wearing a crown. White and blue.
PANTERA (Panther) a rampant panther. Red and blue with white bands.
SELVA (Forest) a rhinoceros bearing a huge tree hung with hunting implements. Green and orange-yellow with white bands.
TARTUCA (Tortoise) a tortoise. Yellow and blue.
Terziere di San Martino
CIVETTA (Owl) an owl. Black and red with white bands.
LEOCORNO (Unicorn) a unicorn. White and orange-yellow with blue bands.
NICCHIO (Shell) a seashell. Blue with yellow and red bands.
TORRE (Tower) an elephant with a tower on its back. Dark bordeaux red with white and blue bands.
VALDIMONTONE or simply MONTONE (Ram) a rampant ram. White and yellow with red bands.

BRUCO (Caterpillar) a caterpillar. Yellow and green with blue bands.
DRAGO (Dragon) a flying dragon. Red and green with yellow bands.
GIRAFFA (Giraffe) a giraffe. White and red.
ISTRICE (Porcupine) a porcupine. White, red, black and blue bands.
LUPA (She-Wolf) the Roman She-Wolf suckling the twins. Black and white with orange-yellow bands.
OCA (Goose) a crowned goose with the cross of Savoia round its neck. White and green with red bands.
The "Contrade" first appeared in the middle of the 15th century to celebrate certain solemn events. They were represented by special wooden devices shaped like animals, such as, for instance, a giraffe, a dragon, a porcupine, a she-wolf, a caterpillar, a goose etc. - worked from inside by the youngsters of the districts they represented. They were called after the animals themselves.
Very soon these associations began to organize shows of their own, such as: bull hunting (suppressed in 1590), buffalo races (only until 1650), donkey races and a game called "Giuoco delle Pugna".
In ancient times (besides the usual horse-races which took place in many towns of Italy to celebrate certain particular religious and civil events) the Sienese played other kinds of games, such as: Mazzascudo (mace and shield) because the players bore maces and shields; the Giorgiani in honour of San Giorgio (battles with blunt weapons); Elmora detto dei cestarelli because the players wore certain funny baskets (cestarelli) on their heads; le Pugna (punching) abolished in 1324 because the players started throwing stones at one another, then weapons and sticks were used and a real battle ensued. To re-establish order the Bishop was compelled to descend into the square with a train of priests and monks. "La pallonata", a game played between the "Terzi" of the town. A huge ball was thrown from the top of the "Mangia" tower by the youngsters of one of the "Terzi" into the field of their opponents. This game was played on January 13, 1555 for Biagio di Montluc, the French Marshall.
Of all these games only the Palio has survived. The preparations for this parade are slow and methodic like a liturgical procedure. Four days before the day of the Palio trials take place in the "Campo" square which is turned into a race track. A thick layer of earth is spread on the ground and a row of mattresses is placed against the walls at the dangerous corner of San Martino to protect the jokeys in case they fall.
The whole square is amazingly fit for such manifestations because its shape is that of a mediaeval Roman amphitheatre closed at the base by the straight line of the Palazzo Pubblico. Besides being semi-circular this peculiar square is also funnel-shaped like the theatres of the imperial age. Eleven streets run into it, though it is extremely difficult to percieve them from the middle of the square. All around the track, perched up against the walls of the houses, seats are arranged one behind and above the other like bleachers. Windows, balconies and loggias, too, are made ready for the visitors; 33,000 seats in all, but they are far from sufficient and are always sold out long before the day of the performance. In the centre of the square there is room for about 28,000 people to stand, but this is not enough either and the roofs, the turrets and the cornices of the old houses looking on to the square are also crowded. There are people everywhere, even in the most unlikely places.
On both the appointed days every year the "Contrade" - that is to say all the Sienese population - compete for a prize which is but a hand painted silk banner (pallium). Each "Contrada" is represented by a group of young men called "Comparsa" arranged as follows: one drummer, two flag-bearers, with their flags, one "Duce", two grooms, one page carrying a flag with two pages at his sides carrying the emblems of the "Contrada", the race-horse called barbero with a jockey called "barbaresco", last the jokey who is to run the race on a parade horse called "soprallasso" followed by a groom.
The historical parade is a lively display of rich medieval costumes which date back to the time period from 1430 to 1480; their colours are as bright as one may fancy. The procession goes winding its way round the "Campo" square in the following order: the flag-bearer of the Commune on horseback bearing the standard of Siena (the black and white Balzana) followed by his groom, a group of drummers, a group of trumpeters and musicians called "musici di Palazzo" playing the march composed for the Palio by Pietro Formichi in 1875 on their bugles, the Captains, the representatives of the "Podestà" (called podesterie), the flag-bearers with the standards of the "Terzieri" of the town and of the lands belonging to the Commune called "Masse", the flag-bearers of the Corporations of the Arts and Crafts, the captain of the peopIe (Capitano del popolo) on horseback and a group of flag-bearers with the flags of the old Sienese Republic.
Next come the representatives of the "Contrade" called "comparse". The first ten are those which are to run in the palio horse race; they are followed by a row of young pages bearing festoons of laurel leaves and then by the seven "Contrade" that do not run (they have no "barbero" and no jockey).
Next comes the captain of Justice (Capitano di Giustizia) riding a horse and then the representatives of the seven "Contrade" that no longer exist: Cock, Lion, Beam, Oak, Sword, Viper. Last comes the triumphal chariot (carroccio) drawn by huge oxen. In the chariot are seated the four "Provveditori di Biccherna" (administrative authority who in times of yore used to superintend public representations, along with the oriflamme of the Commune, the Palio to be awarded to the victor, and a group of trumpeters.
When this magnificent pageant has slowly gone round the square, all the representatives go to sit on a platform raised just for the purpose beneath the windows of the "Palazzo Pubblico". When they have all been seated ther, they look like a strange army after some brilliant victory, or a train of heroes or of poets ready to enter Paradise. As soon as everything is quiet, the flag-bearers from all of the "Contrade" perform together with their flags in what is most commonally known as "gioco delle bandiere". They throw them high up into the air and catch them again before they touch the ground; it is a splendid, most decorative display of colours accompanied by the beating of drums, the sound of bugles and trumpets and the chimes of the big bell on top of the "Mangia" tower; the little bell on the chariot, known in Siena as "Martinella", is also very busy ringing.
All of this is but a prelude, a time of anxiety and expectation. When at last the horses appear and the race starts, the crowd becomes delirious. The jockeys goad their horses round the square three times and the people shout as if the town were about to fall.
The spirit of Siena is in the very colours of her "Contrade" and in all the manifestations connected with each of them. First of all, the benediction of the horses and jockeys, each in the church of their own "Contrada", early in the afternoon just before the Palio. It is this spirit that animates the whole manifestation and contributes such enthusiasm and pathos to the scene.
This traditional popular manifestation lasts four days (from June 29 to July 2 and from August 13 to 16) and finishes in the streets of the victorious "Contrada" where the people celebrate the happy event in a most joyous way. Winner pays all.
Whoever happens to be in Siena during these exciting days can, but join in the enthusiasm of the people for the Palio and, of course, the final victory. Visitors, in fact, often go roaming through the winding streets of the ancient town sympathizing with the "Contrada" in which they are living; they do their best to understand the alliances and rivalries between the contradas and temporarily become fervent "contradaioli" (as the inhabitants of each Contrada are called) having much at heart the health of the race horse and of the jockey.

Steven Spielberg’s 1993 movie Schindler’s List looks like a documentary; it appears to be a true story that includes real Holocaust footage, but it is actually fiction, LOOSELY based on a true story. The movie is based on a NOVEL entitled Schindler’s Ark, written by Thomas Keneally, an Australian author of several novels, who knew nothing about the Holocaust until he met a Holocaust survivor and began research for this book.
It has been several years since I purchased Keneally’s book in the FICTION section of a Barnes and Noble store, but as I recall, there was an introduction in which Keneally explained that he went to a luggage store in southern California in 1980 where he met the owner, a man named Poldek Pfefferberg, who was one of the Jews saved by Oscar Schindler.
When Pfefferberg found out that Keneally was a novelist, he told him the story of Oskar Schindler. Then Pfefferberg went with Keneally to Poland where the two of them visited Kraków, where the Jewish Ghetto in the story was located; Pferrerberg showed Keneally some of the places associated with the Schindler story. In gratitude for all his help, Keneally dedicated his NOVEL entitled Schindler’s Ark to Pfefferberg.
In 1982, the book Schindler’s Ark won the Man Booker Prize for FICTION. Why did Keneally classify his book as a NOVEL if it is a true story? Because Keneally is a Catholic, who once aspired to be a priest; he learned in Catholic school not to include fictional stories in a book based on the truth and pass the stories off as the Gospel truth.
Keneally’s research for his book included finding old photographs which were used to create scenes in his book; Spielberg also used these old photos for scenes in his movie.

Asteroid-Mining Project Aims for Deep-Space Colonies

A new asteroid-mining company launched Tuesday with the goal of helping humanity expand across the solar system by tapping the vast riches of space rocks.
The new firm, called Deep Space Industries, Inc., announced today (Jan. 22) that it plans to launch a fleet of prospecting spacecraft in 2015, then begin harvesting metals and water from near-Earth asteroids within a decade or so. Such work could make it possible to build and refuel spacecraft far above our planet's surface, thus helping our species get a foothold in the final frontier.
"Using resources harvested in space is the only way to afford permanent space development," Deep Space CEO David Gump said in a statement. Deep Space Industries will hold a press conference today in Santa Monica, Calif., at 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST/1800 GMT) to unveil more details of its bold mission plan; you can watch the webcast live here at SPACE.com.
"More than 900 new asteroids that pass near Earth are discovered every year," Gump explained. "They can be like the Iron Range of Minnesota was for the Detroit car industry last century — a key resource located near where it was needed. Deep Space is the second company to jump into the asteroid-mining business. The first, the billionaire-backed firm Planetary Resources, had its own unveiling last April.
Deep Space will inspect potential mining targets with 55-pound (25 kilograms) spacecraft it calls Firefly, the first of which are targeted for launch in 2015.
Fireflies will conduct asteroid reconnaissance on the cheap. They'll be made from low-cost "cubesat" components and will hitch a ride to space aboard rockets that also carry large communications satellites, Deep Space officials said.
Credit: Space.com Store "We can make amazing machines smaller, cheaper and faster than ever before," Deep Space chairman Rick Tumlinson said in a statement. "Imagine a production line of Fireflies, cocked and loaded and ready to fly out to examine any object that gets near the Earth."
The Firefly fleet's work will pave the way for 70-pound (32 kg) spacecraft called Dragonfly, which will blast off beginning in 2016. These Dragonflies will bring asteroid samples back to Earth during missions that last two to four years. Some samples will help the company determine mining targets, while others will probably be sold to researchers and collectors, officials said.
The public will get to fly along with both probes, whose activities will likely be funded in some measure by corporate sponsorship, Deep Space officials said.
"The public will participate in Firefly and Dragonfly missions via live feeds from Mission Control, online courses in asteroid mining sponsored by corporate marketers and other innovative ways to open the doors wide," Gump said. "The Google Lunar X Prize, Unilever and Red Bull each are spending tens of millions of dollars on space sponsorships, so the opportunity to sponsor a Firefly expedition into deep space will be enticing."
Building and refueling spacecraft off Earth
These activities are all precursors to Deep Space's ultimate goal, which is the harvesting and in-space utilization of asteroid resources.
The company intends to begin extracting metals and other building materials from space rocks within 10 years, officials said. These components will first be used to build communications satellites off-Earth, with the construction of space-based solar power stations coming later. Precious metals such as platinum will also be delivered to Earth for terrestrial use.
Deep Space's construction activities will be aided by a patent-pending 3D printer called the MicroGravity Foundry, officials said.
"The MicroGravity Foundry is the first 3D printer that creates high-density, high-strength metal components even in zero gravity," company co-founder and MicroGravity Foundry inventor Stephen Covey said in a statement. "Other metal 3D printers sinter powdered metal, which requires a gravity field and leaves a porous structure, or they use low-melting point metals with less strength."
Asteroid Basics: A Space Rock Quiz
Asteroids are fascinating for lots of reasons. They contain a variety of valuable resources and slam into our planet on a regular basis, occasionally snuffing out most of Earth's lifeforms. How much do you know about space rocks?
Deep Space Industries will also focus on extracting asteroid water, which can be split into its constituent hydrogen and oxygen — the chief components of rocket fuel. The company's mining efforts could thus lead to the establishment of in-space "gas stations" that allow satellites and journeying spacecraft to top up their tanks relatively cheaply and efficiently.
"We will only be visitors in space until we learn how to live off the land there," Tumlinson said. "This is the Deep Space mission — to find, harvest and process the resources of space to help save our civilization and support the expansion of humanity beyond the Earth — and doing so in a step-by-step manner that leverages off our space legacy to create an amazing and hopeful future for humanity."
Deep Space Industries' ambitions are similar to those of Planetary Resources, which also plans to tap asteroid metals and water to help open the solar system up to exploration and exploitation.
Planetary Resources could prove to be a tough competitor. It was founded by private-spaceflight pioneers Peter Diamandis and Eric Anderson, and its deep-pocketed investors include Google execs Larry Page and Eric Schmidt.
