As a citizen of Maryland and in particular, the Baltimore area of the state, I am declaring a clear violation of the Fair and Balanced Elections provision of the Constitution and laws protecting these elections.
When a citizen goes to the polls, whether primary voting or elections, with no knowledge of the candidates on the ballot, then you do not have a fair and balanced election. When an incumbant is the only name to appear in the local media during the campaign season. When a locality hears daily details of primary elections in other areas of the state and of national elections, but have a blackout on the elections occurring in their own local elections, you have a failure of Fair and Balanced elections. When an incumbant is reported about in the media for legislative events during his/her elections at a time when no other election information is being distibuted on said media, this is a failure in Fair and Balanced elections.
These are a few of my experiences in the Baltimore area. The media outlets for Baltimore include Local TV news on ABC, NBC, CBS and public TV. The print news includes Baltimore Sun, Maryland and Baltimore Business Journals, City Paper, online Baltimore Brew. Radio includes Local Radio news on ABC, NBC, CBS, and public radio.
I'm going to take one candidate and race: Cardin vs Muse in the US Senate race, but this one example is true for all the challengers in all races against incumbants...Sarbanes, Cummings, Ruppersberger. All races accept the Montgomery County race had no airtime for challengers. We see how Fair and Balanced elections work if we watch the Republican primary race. Everyone hears from all candidates....we know the issues....we know the candidates stance on those issues.....the candidates are reported equally because name recognition and fundraising needs airtime. EVERY NEWS OUTLET ABOVE GIVES THIS RACE DAILY ATTENTION WITH FAIR AND BALANCED REPORTING! THIS IS A DEMOCRATIC ELECTION. Here in Maryland, there is no air time given to local candidates....you never hear the issues, candidate's voting records or stances on issues, or even their names. A MARYLAND VOTER GOES TO THE POLLS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO INFORMATION ON CANDIDATES OTHER THAN THE INCUMBANT.
If a news outlet prints a story about Senator Cardin during election season....he is signing a bill that is great for his constituents....you cannot 'comment' to give a counterpoint on the issue....the media will not show any negative coverage on the incumbant candidate. It is startling how blanketed these elections are and this is why we have 'Rulers for Life' in Maryland, as Steny Hoyer says. It is a clear vio;ation of election laws and I call it Election Fraud. You can't get votes or fundraise without name recognition and you can't get name recognition without media. Public news media are the outlet for this coverage while paid advertizing is another. It is a requirement that public news media participate in Fair and Balanced Elections....
I want a Justice Department investigation of this ongoing election irregularity in Maryland, and I contest election results that allow a politician to win elected office under these violations. I say that Ben Cardin (and all the other incumbants) did not win this 2012 primary election because of these election violations.
