WITH ALL THESE THIRD WAY POLICIES, I THINK I'M TURNING CHINESE I REALLY THINK SO!
WHAT WE SAW OF THE CHINESE MODEL IS A DRIVING COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION THAT CONSUMES MOST OF STUDENTS AND PARENTS TIME AND A SLAVISH TIE TO FORMULAS AND MEMORIZATION THAT HAS STIFLED CREATIVITY AND INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. THE GATES FOUNDATION AND THE ELITE SCHOOLS EMBRACE THIS CHINESE STYLE WITH MODIFICATIONS. NO ONE THINKS THE IDEA OF EXTENDED SCHOOL HOURS IS A BAD ONE......NO ONE THINKS MORE RIGOR AND ACCOUNTABILITY IS BAD. IT IS THE WAY IT IS BEING DONE THAT HAS EVERYONE UP AT ARMS. IF WE LOOK AT THE NEXT PHASE OF PRIVATIZING PUBLIC SCHOOLS (ABOVE KILLING THE TEACHER'S UNIONS) YOU SEE THE KHAN EDUCATION SYSTEM. SIXTY MINUTES HAD A GOOD PROGRAM ON KHAN BUT FAILED TO ELABORATE WHERE IT MIGHT BE GOING. KHAN ACADEMY IS A GREAT PROGRAM THAT WILL BENEFIT EVERYONE. THE CONCEPT OF TUTORIALS WILL ENHANCE BOTH PARENT PARTICIPATION AND TEACHER SUPPORT. IF LEFT AS A FREE PUBLIC ACCESS TOOL IT WOULD WORK WELL. THAT ISN'T THE GOAL OF THESE PROGRAMS. THE GOAL IS A WORLD-WIDE SCRIPTED EDUCATION MODULE AND THE ADAPTATION OF COMPUTER DOMINATED CLASSES. IMAGINE A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE.......THE 1%.....DEVELOPING AND DECIDING CONTENT OF WHAT EVERYONE WILL LEARN; THE IMAGE OF CHILDREN TIED TO A COMPUTER SCREEN ALL DAY IN CLASS AND ALL NIGHT DOING HOMEWORK. THIS IS THE OUTCOME TOWARDS WHICH THESE THIRD WAY CORPORATE DEMOCRATS ARE WORKING.
FLIPPING THE CLASSROOM IS THE NEW 'IT' WORD IN EDUCATION. PLACING THE LECTURE IN THE HANDS OF THESE ELITES WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS USING AFTER-SCHOOL TO GARNER EDUCATION CONCEPTS WITH THE DAYTIME CLASSES BEING MORE ABOUT APPLYING THESE CONCEPTS THROUGH MANAGED COMPUTER PACKETS. THE TEACHER'S DUTIES ARE NOW SIMPLY TO ACT AS A TECHNICIAN HELPING THE STUDENTS WITH PROBLEMS. NOW YOU CAN SEE WHERE THIS IS GOING. TEACHERS DON'T NEED TO BE PROFESSIONALS AND EDUCATION DOESN'T NEED TO BE LOCAL OR ORIGINAL. CONTENT AND PROCESS IS SCRIPTED SO HAVING SOMEONE WHO CAN SIMPLY STUDY THE MODULE FOR THE DAY AND DIRECT THE STUDENT THROUGH THE PROGRAM IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED. THINK OF THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THESE 1% WILL HAVE IN A CLASSROOM TO MAXIMIZE PROFITS!!!
THIS CHICAGO STRIKE IS ABOUT MORE THAN PAY AND HOURS. IT IS ABOUT RAHM EMANUEL'S MOVEMENT TO EXPLODE THE CHARTER SCHOOLS IN CHICAGO AND EXPANDING THE NON-UNION TIE TO CHARTER SCHOOLS. REMEMBER, THIS IS A POLITICIAN RUNNING AS A DEMOCRAT PROMOTING THE BUSTING OF PUBLIC UNIONS, THE POLICES OF CHARTERS THAT ALLOW LOSS OF CIVIL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES, THAT MOVES EDUCATION CLOSER TO BECOMING A COMMODITY, ALL THE WHILE IMPLEMENTING REFORM THAT WEAKENS EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES WHILE TAILORING AN EFFICIENT, COST-EFFECTIVE STRUCTURE NECESSARY FOR PRIVATE PROFIT. RAHM IS AFTER ALL AN INVESTMENT BANKER. HE IS GIDDY WITH EXCITEMENT AT THE PROFITS TO BE MADE ON K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
THIS IS OF COURSE THE TRAJECTORY IN MARYLAND AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY. CHICAGO AND NEW YORK TOOK THE LEAD AND ARE FARTHER ALONG, BUT THIRD WAY LEADERSHIP IN DEMOCRATIC STATES PLAN TO MOVE FORWARD. WE SIMPLY NEED TO GET RID OF THESE THIRD WAY POLITICIANS AND ELECT REAL PROGRESSIVES.
WE MUST VOTE OUR INCUMBENTS OUT!!!!
IT IS CRITICAL FOR ALL PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO GET OUT TO SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS.....SCHOOL MEETINGS, EDUCATION NON-PROFIT MEETINGS....CITY COUNCIL MEETING ON EDUCATION. WE NEED TO EFFECT WHO ARE ON THE SCHOOL BOARDS. LOOK AT MY CALENDARS FOR MEETINGS AND ATTEND OFTEN.
YOU MUST GET ACTIVE AND STAND UP....FIGHT BACK!!!
WE CAN CHANGE THIS!! THIS LEADERSHIP REPRESENT THE WORST OF AMERICA AND AS SUCH WILL FALL.
CARDIN, SARBANES, AND CUMMINGS ALL SUPPORT THIS EDUCATION REFORM AND CHARTER MOVEMENT.....WRITE - IN YOUR CANDIDATE AGAINST THESE INCUMBENTS THIS NOVEMBER.....VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE!! THIS IS NOT A BIPARTISAN ISSUE....IT IS A REPUBLICAN STANCE.

"I teach the way that I wish I was taught. The lectures are coming from me, an actual human being who is fascinated by the world around him."
A world of skills to practice, with help along the way Practice math at your own pace with our adaptive assessment environment. You can start at 1+1 and work your way into calculus or jump right into whatever topic needs some brushing up.
Each problem is randomly generated, so you never run out of practice material. If you need a hint, every single problem can be broken down, step-by-step, with one click. If you need more help, you can always watch a related video.
Your stats, instantly Every time you work on a problem or watch a video, the Khan Academy remembers what you've learned and where you're spending your time. We keep all of this data private but expose powerful statistics to each user and their coaches. You get at-a-glance information about everything you've been learning and whether or not you've been hitting your goals.
You can drill all the way down from a bird's-eye view of your profile into each and every skill practice problem that you've ever worked on. You'll see real, hard data about your increasing mastery of math.
A map of knowledge The knowledge map shows all of our challenges, skills, and concepts. You can zoom in and out and pan around all the different skills and challenges, just like on a normal map. You can start working anywhere on the map, and the Khan Academy will suggest the best skills for you to work on. We'll even remind you when you need a review.
As you zoom out of the knowledge map, you'll find our challenges, which combine the concepts from multiple smaller skills. Zooming all the way out of the map and completing all of our challenges is a sign of math mastery.
We're constantly adding new skills to be discovered.
Your classroom data...finally Teachers and coaches can access all of their students' data. You can get a summary of class performance as a whole or dive into a particular student's profile to figure out exactly which topics are problematic. The class profile lets coaches glance at their dashboard and quickly figure out how to best spend their time teaching.
We've put a lot of energy into making sure that the Khan Academy empowers teachers by giving them access to the data they should've had for years. You'll know instantly if a student is struggling in multiplying fractions...or if she hit a streak and is now far ahead of the class.
Badges worth bragging about We're full of game mechanics. As soon as you log in, you'll start earning badges and points for learning. The more you challenge yourself, the more bragging rights you'll get.
We've heard of students spending hour after hour watching physics videos and 5th graders relentlessly tackling college-level math to earn Khan Academy badges. Some of the smaller badges are very easy, but the most legendary badges might require years of work.
A global classroom You're joining millions of Khan Academy students from all over the world who learn at their own pace every single day.
Feel free to read some of the inspirational stories shared by our global community, and we'd love if you shared yours.
WHAT WE SEE IN CHICAGO TEACHER UNION LEADER KAREN LEWIS IS A REAL LEADER WHO NEEDS TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THIS UNION'S NATIONAL LEADERSHIP. WE HAVE WITH THE AFT AND NEA TWO GROUPS THAT HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED AND UNABLE TO LEAD.
DO YOU HEAR ANY OF THIS IS MARYLAND? ANY MEDIA OUTLET.....ANY JUSTICE/UNION ORGANIZATION TALKING THIS UP? I DON'T HEAR ANYONE SHOUTING LOUDLY AND STRONGLY AGAINST THIS.
THIS TELLS US WE HAVE A CAPTURED LEADERSHIP AND WE NEED TO GET RID OF THEM!!!
Ravitch: Tomorrow is Decision Day in Chicago.
by Diane Ravitch | 09/09/2012 Chicago Teachers Union
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has tried to bully the Chicago Teachers Union and its leader Karen Lewis.
Lewis was elected by the members because they knew she would stand up for them.
Emanuel has the support of the Wall Street hedge fund managers organization, somewhat absurdly called Democrats for Education Reform. He also has the other big-monied people in Chicago, as mentioned in this article in the Chicago Tribune, including billionaire Penny Pritzker.
The article mentions that DFER staged a protest at union headquarters to oppose a strike. I wonder how many hedge fund managers send their children to Chicago public schools. I am trying to imagine hedge fund managers marching in front of union headquarters and carrying signs. I am guessing that what happened was that they “staged” a protest, meaning that they hired out-of-work actors to carry protest signs. Maybe the unemployed actors have children in the Chicago public schools.
The great thing about having Karen Lewis there is that every teacher in America knows she will stand strong for them. She will not sell them out. And she will not sell out the children.
She knows that teachers’ working conditions are children’s learning conditions.
Both Rahm and Penny know that too. That’s why they don’t send their children to the schools for which they are responsible. They send their children to a school with small classes, lots of arts and physical education, a great library, experienced teachers, and a full curriculum. The school where they send their children doesn’t give standardized tests and does not evaluate teachers by their students’ test scores.
I WANT MARYLAND TO LOOK AT WHO IS ON THIS LIST OF SUPPORTERS-------BALTIMORE TEACHER' UNION. THESE UNION LEADERS KNOW THEY NEED TO STEP UP AND HELP ORGANIZE PARENTS AND COMMUNITY AROUND THIS EFFORT TO SAVE AMERICAN SCHOOLS FROM WALL STREET. I AM GOING TO SEND THEM AN EMAIL THANKING THEM FOR SUPPORTING CHICAGO AND ENCOURAGING THEIR EXPANDED EFFORT HERE IN BALTIMORE.
I WILL TAKE EXCEPTION WITH THE AFT WHO RECENTLY VOTED NATIONALLY NOT TO FIGHT THIS CHARTER SCHOOL MOVEMENT. TO THINK THEY CAN SUPPORT THIS STRIKE WHILE SUPPORTING THE CHARTER MOVEMENT RINGS FALSE. THIS LEADERSHIP NEEDS TO LEAD OR LEAVE.
Blog Solidarity from Around the Country and World by Jackson Potter | 09/06/2012
The Chicago Teachers Union wants to thank the many individuals and organizations who have written letters of solidarity or contributed to our Solidarity Fund over the last few weeks. The list below represents the many organizations to which the many individual contributors belong and organizations who have themselves written letters of support. People across the country and the world are looking at our confrontation with the Chicago Board of Education as a key fight against the specious attacks on our public schools and the teachers and paraprofessionals who make them work. Thank you for this tremendous outpouring of support that will help sustain us in our struggle for educational justice. See the map below and the list along with it (zoom out to see more far-flung supporters).
