Candidates for Governor Respond to Survey; Walsh Supports Single-payer
June 10, 2014
Responding to a Healthcare-Now! of Maryland health care survey, gubernatorial candidates Del. Heather Mizeur, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Cindy Walsh all indicated that they believed that health care was a basic human right. They all agreed that it was the responsibility of the state to ensure that all Marylanders received the health care they need. There were differences, however, regarding a single-system.
Neither Brown nor Mizeur would say that they favored a single-payer system and that they would support single-payer legislation and, if passed, sign it into law. Only Walsh unequivocally supported single-payer calling for “expanded and improved Medicare for all”. In his response, Brown expressed support for universal healthcare and the Affordable Care Act. He indicated that he would be watching the experience of Vermont’s Green Mountain Care single-payer model as he considered options to build a better Maryland. Mizeur favored studying a single-payer system. If it was shown to be fiscally responsible, she would push for passage of single-payer after 2017 when the federal government allows for innovation waivers.
The health care survey was sent to all of the candidates from both parties running in the June 24th primary.

Gansler, Mizeur call for faster rise in minimum wage Candidates appear at forum sponsored by community development advocates
6:58 p.m. EDT, May 12, 2014
Two of the three Democratic candidates for governor told community development advocates Monday that they would reopen the debate over the just-passed boost in Maryland's minimum wage to accelerate the increase.
Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler and Del. Heather R. Mizeur each expressed dissatisfaction with the minimum wage bill passed this year by the General Assembly. The bill raising the wage to $10.10 was a top priority of Gov. Martin O'Malley, but legislators slowed its implementation. Under the new law, the raise will rise to $10.10 in 2018.
Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, the front-runner in the race and political partner of O'Malley, did not bring up the issue in his remarks to the Community Development Network of Maryland and the Maryland Community Action Partnership.
The two groups held a forum for gubernatorial candidates at the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City. One Republican candidate – Charles County business executive Charles Lollar — joined Mizeur, Gansler, Brown and little-known Democrat Cindy Walsh at the event.
Though Mizeur voted for the minimum wage bill as a delegate from Montgomery County, she complained about the minimum wage not reaching $10.10 until 2018 – in the middle of the next gubernatorial campaign. She also said she would like to go beyond the minimum wage to set a "living wage" of $16.70 an hour.
Mizeur and Gansler also faulted the legislation for failing to include an indexing provision that would automatically tie the wage to inflation. And they criticized the lack of an increase in the minimum for tipped workers, indicating they would ask the General Assembly to adopt those provisions.
O'Malley, with Brown's support, included such provisions in his original bill but they were stripped out in the House of Delegates.
Lollar also got in on the minimum wage discussion, using it to express displeasure at Maryland taxes.
"You can increase the minimum wage to $50 an hour but if the state takes $45 out of that, you only have $5 an hour," he said.
The candidates spoke separately to the group of several hundred community development advocates. Each promised to make affordable housing and livable neighborhoods priorities if elected.
Both Mizeur and Brown proposed at least a tenfold increase in the amount budgeted for the Maryland Affordable Housing Trust. Mizeur said she wanted to grow the program, which provides incentives to developers to build low-cost rental housing, to $25 million. Brown set his goal at $20 million.
There was no interaction, as there was in last week's televised debate, but Gansler took several back-handed swipes at Brown without mentioning him by name. The attorney general prefaced his remarks by asking a "procedural question" about the presence of the Brown's "tracker" in the room – indicating that months after the rival campaign began videotaping Gansler at public events, the practice still rankles him.

My platform is completely about rebuilding oversight and accountability to address fraud, corruption, and lack of transparency. The second issue centers on keeping global corporations away from control of Maryland’s economy by building a domestic economy as the main driver. This is what most Maryland citizens want and it is this platform stance that motivates for censure and the call of unviable by those with the power of politics in the state. You will notice none of the ‘three democratic candidates’ allowed to participate in the primary election ever mention these two major issues and this is why voters in Maryland are disaffected and forced to apathy in most elections. My platform is what democratic voters want to see. So, to willfully and deliberately keep my name and platform out of the primary venues is to attack the right of an electorate to be able to cast a free and intelligent vote. It is the voters who decide if a candidate’s campaign is not viable by rejecting the platform at the ballot box.

Below you will see how Cindy Walsh for Governor of Maryland was recognized as a legitimate and viable candidate in many venues. I have a network of people following my private non-profit all over the state and it serves as a campaign website. So, whereas I may not purchase lawn signs-----I do extensive outreach to individuals and organizations that I feel are looking for my campaign platform. Simply because I do not have campaign flyers or posters does not mean I am not engaged in electioneering.
I want to emphasize that although many smaller venues still follow the laws of inviting all candidates in a race to a forum-----the numbers of venues are decreasing and the opportunities disappear if larger venues are openly allowed to break the law. I want to include a few articles that show I was engaged as a candidate and tried as hard as I could to participate in all venues available when I knew they were to occur. Often I heard of the venue in the news after it occurred and had no way to request I be included before-hand. I did let the venues know afterwards that it is not legal to exclude a candidate in a race as it damages the candidate’s campaign.

As you see below there was recognition that debates were being handled unusually and a sign of things to come early in the primary. You see where the 3 candidates highlighted came to a joint agreement to a debate schedule----as if they are allowed to exclude the other candidates from this discussion or the debates. We saw one democratic candidate inviting the other two to events as if all of this was legitimate election activity. Over and over you see the term ‘leading democratic candidates’ at a time when Gansler and Mizeur were polling at best around 10% with a 3.7% margin of error after months of saturated media coverage. This is a mockery of the primary protections given by FCC and IRS regulations regarding participation in an election.

Debate dates set for democratic gubernatorial candidates Written by Hassan Giordano DMV Daily
The three 'leading democratic gubernatorial tickets' have come to a joint compromise on three upcoming gubernatorial debates, all before the June 24th Primary Elections.
Having set the gubernatorial debates for the weeks of May 5th, May 19th and June 2nd set to be located in the southern D.C. Region of the state, along with one being in the Baltimore region and one being broadcast statewide. They have yet to set the date or location for the one Lt. Governor debate that all parties have agreed upon.
Having excluded the Republican gubernatorial candidates, as well as the lesser known democratic candidates (Ralph/Freda Jaffe, Charles Smith/Clarence Tucker, Cindy Walsh/Mary Wingate-Pennacchia); the Anthony Brown/Ken Ulman, Heather Mizeur/Delman Coates and Doug Gansler/Jolene Ivey tickets seem to be setting the parameters of the upcoming debates.
Below you see an event that worked the way it should…..in every case where Cindy Walsh for Governor participated I was professional and well-spoken so there was no indication at any time that I was not serious about winning this election. I will say that after the first few larger venue forums in which I was allowed to participate-- my ability to insist I participate when denied disappeared. The other candidates later often refused to participate in forums that included me and as a result the venues sometimes forcibly excluded me.
Candidates in governor's race vie for Bowie's support at forum By ALEX JACKSON ajackson@bladenews.com www.twitter.com/thealexjackson | Capital Gazette Updated 2 months ago
Six candidates in Maryland’s governor’s race got a chance to separate themselves Monday night, as they discussed issues from health care to affordable housing at a gubernatorial forum in Bowie.
Among the candidates speaking at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts were four candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, including Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, Attorney General Doug Gansler, Del. Heather Mizeur, D-Montgomery and Cindy Walsh.
Also at the event, hosted by the Prince George’s County Women’s Alliance, were two candidates seeking the GOP nomination — Del. Ron George, R-Anne Arundel and Charles County businessman Charles Lollar.
Maryland’s primary election will be held in less than two months, June 24.
Democratic candidates Ralph Jaffe and Charles Smith, and GOP candidates David Craig and Larry Hogan, did not attend the event.
Here’s a rundown of some of the issues discussed at Monday’s forum:
Below you see where the dis-invitation started as candidates appearing had the power to exclude. The person in charge of this forum pretended that Cindy Walsh was excluded because I failed to respond in time to be included but I immediately mailed the email confirmation with the date soon after the invitation and had offered to this pastor to show him this very email at the time of the forum----it would have taken a minute----but he refused because the point was to not have me in this event. Note that this forum is one in which 150 black pastors take a video of the event to their congregations for what will be for most the only exposure to the gubernatorial candidates. The same happened here in Baltimore where the same group of pastor s excluded Cindy Walsh from a similar forum. Since my entire campaign platform is about civil liberties, civil rights, labor rights, and public justice, all critical issues for most of the black population in both Prince Georges and Baltimore----this is a civil rights issue as well as an issue of breaking election law in willfully and deliberately damaging a candidate’s campaign.
I have included the email correspondence from the Collective Empowerment Group under my section on violations by 501c3s and you see there is no mention of candidates at the top of the ticket as if that is even legal. What I want you to see here is that Cindy Walsh tried as hard as possible at every turn to participate and see myself as a viable candidate at every turn.
Maryland Politics
Debate over who can participate precedes Thursday forum in Maryland’s governor’s race
The biggest drama at Thursday night’s Maryland gubernatorial forum started to play out before any of the candidates spoke.
After a stellar rendition of the national anthem, four hopefuls took the stage at an event put on by the Collective Empowerment Group, made up of Prince George’s County ministers. There were only three chairs.
Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown (D), Del. Heather R. Mizeur (D-Montgomery) and Charles County businessman Charles Lollar, a Republican, took their seats. Cindy Walsh of Baltimore, a little-known Democratic contender, stood awkwardly by until she was waved off the stage by organizers.
Around the same time, Del. Jolene Ivey (D-Prince George’s), who was sitting in the front row of the audience, sent a text message to a reporter saying she was supposed to be on stage, too, standing in for her running mate, Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler (D), who had a prior commitment in Western Maryland.
“Anthony said he wouldn’t come if I spoke in Doug’s place,” Ivey wrote. “Why do you think he’s scared of me?”
Brown campaign manager Justin Schall later disputed Ivey’s contention, saying the organizers had made it clear in an April letter inviting candidates to participate that only the those on the top of the ticket could be on stage.
“Regrettably, Jolene hasn’t been accurate about a lot of things lately, and this is just another reckless and irresponsible statement from the Gansler campaign that we’ve all come to expect,” Schall said.
Brown aides also suggested it was ironic that Gansler would skip a forum on a day that he launched a new television ad criticizing Brown for missing a televised debate.
Below you see I completed every primary election questionnaire sent by all organizations which by the way sent these to all candidates in a race as one would expect in sharing information about elections with members of their audience. Some of these organizations and media chose not to show my comments and one even stated I had not responded when I had. So, the knowledge to include all candidates in a race in the invitation to speak to an audience----in whatever format is known-----it is simply ignored by the major venues in the state and smaller venues are feeling now they can exclude when they want.

Thank you Phillip for shouting out----Cindy Walsh for Governor of Maryland that is doing just as you say and you will notice----my campaign was not included on any of Baltimore news outlets----public or private.
We do not need to spend huge money on job training----we need to rebuild the domestic economy of small and regional businesses that were killed by national and global corporations. It is those large corporations that are deliberately creating a stagnant jobs market. Simply making small business owners of citizens who hire locally is the answer. As you probably know, that is how Enterprise Zones are supposed to work.
Take a look at my campaign website Cindy Walsh for Governor of Maryland to see I'm a long-time advocate for what you want and then get out and network for me. Also, ask why media and justice organizations censured my entire campaign while headlining the very pols that work for these large corporations doing the damage to our local economy!

Cindy Walsh for Governor of Maryland on the democratic ticket regrets not being able to attend this event. Schedule conflicts made it impossible to meet with the citizens of Carroll County. My campaign wants more opportunities to do so this primary season and I feel that Carroll County would support much of my campaign platform.
Please check my campaign website at Citizens Oversight Maryland.com

Thanks so much for organizing this event......you had a good turnout for a first event. May I suggest you either have 3-4 questions or a longer time to speak so candidates can cover more of their platform issues.
Don't forget ----Cindy Walsh for Governor of Maryland is the only one who will fight for public justice, labor justice, and civil rights and liberties at a time when corporations are becoming too powerful!

Thanks,
Cindy Walsh

I would love an opportunity to address the Young Conservatives Club at Westminster. I believe progressives have issues in common with conservatives in this state governor's election.
I look forward to receiving details.

Over the past number of years, the HCC has held a community forum called Candidate's Night which provides the opportunity for residents of Hampden to meet the candidates for various Federal, State and Local positions. We are excited to announce that we will be holding this forum again.
The forum is scheduled Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:45. The forum will be held at the Roosevelt Recreation Center at 1221 W. 36th Street. The schedule will include a meet and greet period from 6:00 - 7:00 and then an opportunity for introduction and questions and answers from 7:00 - 8:45.
Attached to this email is a basic questionnaire that we would like you to complete. Please stay within the guidelines of the questionnaire as we will provide this to the community. You will also be provided with space on a table if you want to bring additional literature. Once I have a finalized list, I will provide more detail concerning the day of the forum.
We are asking that you RSVP and provide answers to the questionnaire by May 9th. If you can not attend, we will still print your answers if they are provided. Please also provide a photo so that we may print in the handout.
Thank you for your consideration of our forum. We hope to see you there so that our concerned citizens can make informed decisions in this election.

Thank you Mr. Erwin for the air time. I wanted to include a few event dates around this area:
The sad thing is that Baltimore has completely censured my campaign and that includes all the leading justice organizations and universities and major media for the black community. Republican stations are including me. Remember, the capture of the democratic party by corporate pols is meant to give no other place for labor and justice to go but to republicans====and we know what republicans think of labor and justice. I hope you will consider having me on as a regular to speak to all the issues on my platform. They really do all equate to justice and often to school to prison issues. Thanks again,
